With the deepening of curriculum reform, the importance of cultivating the core quality of students has been widely acknowledged by middle school teachers, among which the thinking quality is an important part of the core quality of English discipline. However, for a long time,as a main way to cultivate students’ comprehensive language ability,English reading teaching has had problems such as mode solidification, focusing more on knowledge over thinking, and textual understanding. Thus, such a situation has not actually promoted the significant development of students’ thinking ability.Meanwhile, thinking quality has also become a difficult point in teaching for English teachers due to its abstract demonstration.Thinking quality is an important part of the core quality of English discipline, and English reading provides good conditions for the cultivation of thinking quality with rich cultural connotation, discourse context and language appreciation capbility. To improve students’ thinking quality such as logic thinking, critical thinking and creative thinking, teachers are expected to change the traditional teaching mode into the new one with logic, depth and novelty,so as to guide the students to obtain the text information,to dig in-depth connotation and to stimulate students’ creative thinking. In order to explore the effective teaching method of English reading to improve students’ thinking quality, this paper will divide students’ thinking quality into five levels and design classroom questions from low to high difficulty based on SOLO classification theory,so as to improve students’ thinking quality by combining learning situation and teaching content.SOLO(Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome)classification theory is a "qualitative" evaluation method founded by Australian psychologists Biggs and Collis. The theory, after being introduced in China in the 1990 s,has received wide attention in the field of education. Its thinking level hierarchy structure is based on extensive observation of students’ response in answering the open questions. The theory, which pays much attention to students’ thinking development,is helpful to improve the traditional English reading teaching mode, thus contributing to enhancing students’ thinking ability. This paper consists of five parts. The first chapter covers the main content, background, purpose, significance of the study and the overview of the related theories. The second chapter is the literature review,in which the author classifies the theoretical research and application practice of SOLO classification theory at home and abroad with the literature research method, and cites some important researches in the field of subject teaching in China. In Chapter 3,the author specifically introduces the components of this research, and expounds the concrete operation of applying SOLO classification theory to English reading teaching with case analysis.Chapter 4 is the analysis of the experimental research data from the pretest, interview, posttest results and English examination. The last chapter demonstrates the main findings as well as the deficiencies of this study and presents the difficult points of combining this theory with teaching practice.
