Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu is a collection of the column Shanghai-Makeup Ladies in the Feiyingge Pictorial founded by Wu Youru in the late Qing Dynasty,and is compiled in Wu Youru Hua Bao by posterity.Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu is characterized by "Shanghai-makeup" and "Ladies" and it shows the social features of the time to a certain extent by depicting the female images and lifestyles of urban women in Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty,so it has important historical value in iconology,sociology and other aspects.Taking Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu as the main research object,this article starts with the image sorting,summarizes the images in detail and systematically,and focuses on the female image narrative of Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu by using iconography,formal analysis and sociology of the arts.Then the article analyzes its transition characteristics from the perspective of narrative subject,narrative content and narrative form,and further studies the influence of the transition of female image narrative on female image narrative in the later Republic of China.In the second and third chapters,this article firstly excavate the original environment of Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu to understand its historical origin,existing conditions and so on,and give a basic exploration of its time,original intention,and subsequent development.Through collation and comparison,the relationship among Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu,the column Shanghai-Makeup Ladies in Feiyingge Pictorial,Wu Youru Hua Bao and Dianshizhai Pictorial are analyzed.Secondly,it analyzes the representative types and main characteristics of female image narrative in Ming and Qing Dynasties.Through analyzing the female image narrative of the three representative types,court lady paintings,paintings of a hundred beauties and fictional illustrations in the Ming and Qing Dynasties,it summarizes the main characteristics of female image narrative in this period from the perspective of narrative subject,narrative content and narrative form.In the fourth,fifth,sixth and seventh chapters of this article,firstly,the female image narrative in Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu are summarized as the female as the main body of the image,the narrative of the image and the text,the narrative feature of female images and the narrative theme and imagery concept.Secondly,it analyzes the three aspects of the narrative subject,narrative content and narrative form of female images in Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu.(1)In terms of the female image narrative subject in Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu,it researches on the female images from four aspects: face,hair style,clothing and accessory.The female images depicted in Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu tend to be daily life and close to reality,and are gradually influenced by Western culture.The identity of the women depicted in Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu is verified based on information such as image text prompts,characters’ dressing up,attendance occasions,activity content and other information.The identities of female characters depicted present diversified characteristics.The main characters include prostitutes,housewives,professional women(female storytellers,actresses,female workers in silk mills,female accountants,maids),girls and so on.(2)In terms of the female image narrative content in Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu,the female activity space is divided into private activity space and public activity space from a spatial perspective.Private spaces include boudoirs and other places in the family,mainly to meet their basic physiological needs,entertaining and socializing,and to enhance their cultural self-cultivation;female public activity spaces include theaters,tea houses,restaurants,parks,photo studios,silk reeling factories,temples and so on.Private and public activity spaces together constitute the scope of women’s activity space and various activities of their daily lives.It analyzes the integration of female traditions and emerging lifestyles in the female image narrative of Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu,focusing on women’s diet,living environment,female celebrity ways,professional labor,leisure and entertainment and transportation,which shows the current secular life that blends old and new,Chinese and western in the image.(3)Regarding the female image narrative form in Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu,for the narrative technique of images,it is presented by combining several major narrative elements such as characters,plots,situations,and events.Wu Youru adopts a combination of Chinese and Western techniques as to the presentation skills of the images.At this time,Wu Youru no longer adheres to the rules and can skillfully use Chinese and Western painting techniques to serve his own painting purposes.Regarding the layout of the image,Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu juxtaposes the related Chinese and western elements in the image.In the eighth chapter,this article analyzes the influence of the female image narrative transition of Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu on that of the Republic of China.The main performance is that the female image narrative of Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu leads the image narrative mode of the female "beauty pictures" theme,makes the later painters pay more and more attention to the presentation of women’s western lifestyle,and inspires the popularization of the communication carrier of female image narrative later.Through the detailed analysis of the female image narrative of Hai Shang Bai Yan Tu in this article,it is expected to further supplement the research on the image itself and the important transition link of the pedigree of paintings of one-hundred beauties.
