| With the reform and opening-up,Chinese people get to appreciate foreign movies and books.Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings are two representatives,through which more and more Chinese people began to get interested in foreign fantasy novels.Therefore,the introduction of foreign fantasy novels can meet the demand in China.The Priory on the Orange Tree,a typical fantasy novel,tells a story about the Queen of Inysh fighting against the Nameless One.The book is written by Samantha Shannon who is a bestselling author of The Bone Season Serials in New York Times and Sunday Times.Her work has been translated into twenty-six languages.The Priory of the Orange Tree is her fourth novel and her first outside of The Bone Season series.Sections 1-3 in Chapter One of The Priory of the Orange Tree are selected as translation material.As a fantasy novel,it has some unique elements,including names of people and places,as well as titles which might be difficult for translators to interpret.This thesis applies George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory.The translation project introduces the four steps of the Hermeneutic Motion,namely trust,aggression,incorporation and compensation.The translation process follows the four processes in the Hermeneutic Motion,presenting examples in an attempt to explain the use of the theory in the project.Finally,it explores some translation strategies,including division,omission,substitution,reorganization,specification,amplification,annotation,incorporation and compensation.In doing so,this thesis hopes to enrich the application of the George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory,and helps readers achieve a better understanding of this novel. |
