Smart classroom is a new type of classroom that aims to cultivate highly intelligent and creative talents,effectively using big data and information technology to build out a personalized,intelligent and efficient classroom with functions such as learning analysis and intelligent resource pushing.In July 2021,the State Council issued the "Opinions on Further Reducing Students’ Homework Burdens and Off-Campus Training Burdens in Compulsory Education",announcing that the main position of education will return to schools.It is a general trend to make reasonable use of smart classrooms to improve the accuracy of classroom teaching within schools and promote high-quality development of education.Through combing the literature,I found that the research on smart classroom in China is still in its initial stage.Most of the relevant literature research on smarter classrooms focuses on theoretical discussion and the establishment of information-based classrooms.However,there are few articles on the practical teaching of the combination of smart classroom and English teaching.Most of them are focused on secondary school students and college students,while little research has been done on English classes in the upper elementary grades.Therefore,on the basis of the understanding of the theoretical knowledge of smarter classroom,this thesis will combine the practice of the pilot primary school for the higher grade English smarter classroom,so as to enrich the relevant research on the English smarter classroom teaching in the upper grades of primary school.Based on contextual cognitive learning theory and constructivist learning theory,this study analyzes the two stages before and after the application of the Smart Classroom to explore three main questions.After the Smart Classroom is applied to the English classroom in the upper elementary section,what are the changes in students’ cognitive engagement in the classroom? What are the changes in students’ written expression levels? What are the changes in students’ oral expression levels? To this end,the author conducted a four-month educational experiment in an elementary school in Lvshunkou District,Dalian from September to December 2021,and 80 students from two classes of fifth grade were selected as the participants of the study.The study used questionnaire,interview and test methods to answer three research questions respectively.It was found that after applying the smart classroom teaching model,there were significant changes in students’ cognitive engagement compared to before.Compared with the comparison class,the experimental class had less shallow engagement and reliance strategies and more deep engagement,mainly because the smart classroom provided students with rich learning resources and classroom activities,and had excellent performance in fostering students’ independent learning and other aspects.By analyzing and comparing the performance of the pre-test and post-test of the two classes,I found that the oral expression level and written expression level of the experimental class improved after applying the Smart Classroom teaching model.Through the post-experimental interviews with some students,the author found that the Smart Classroom gave students a platform to showcase their ideas,gave them the opportunity to express their ideas in English,and improved their English expression level while better stimulating their enthusiasm for learning.Of course,this study has some limitations due to the limitations of subjective and objective factors such as the lack of research samples and time constraints.
