Architecture is one of the important ways of political symbol.Different architectural styles,decorative styles and living space embody different powers.Investigat the office buildings in grassroots China can help us understand the power forms and structures of grassroots society.Taking Shui Village in North Sichuan Province as an example,this paper studies how to realize the state power at the grass-roots through the construction of village office,and understand the influence of the construction of village office on national governance and power operation.This paper is mainly based on the interviews with the villagers of Shui Village and the observation of the daily operation of the village office.Based on the theories of architecture and power,it makes a deep description of the shaping process of state power in the village.The study found that the village office style built by the state is consistent with the national new rural construction.The walls and doors of the village office reveal a solemn atmosphere,while the hanging plaques,national flags and banners are symbols of great political significance.Within the village office,the standardized construction and institutionalized management of the village office are embodied in the clear functional identification and division,modern office facilities and equipment,and the management system and regulations with distinct rights and responsibilities.The state thus shapes the field of "public house" in the village society,indicating the presence of the state.At the same time,the village office provides a fixed place for office activities,which separates the public affairs from the private space and concentrates them in the public space of the village office,so that the village affairs and government affairs can be standardized and implemented.Through the operation of the village office,the country fixes the work track of the cadres in the village group,and makes them change from the traditional and rough working method to the refined and responsible system,so as to strengthen the management and control of the cadres at the grass-roots level.The same is true of the villagers.Through political symbols and continuous policies to benefit the people,the country has narrowed the distance with the grass-roots people,which has potentially strengthened the villagers’identification with the country.The village office is the material space that the state will carry out in the village society,and is a new window that the state power penetrates the grass-roots level,also can regard as the new technology in the grass-roots level management.On the one hand,the state represents power through office buildings and their decorations;on the other hand,the state realizes power penetration through architectural space to realize the purpose of the construction of state power at the grass-roots level.At the same time,it should be noted that the village office operation and there are still certain tension between villagers’production and living,so in promoting the modernization of rural governance system and management ability in the process of how best to shape the national image through the village office,more trust on the villagers,village cadres are issues worthy of further study.
