| As an important non-marketing strategy, corporate social responsibility(CSR)has been concerned by scholars for decades. In particular, the key resources for the development of many enterprises are controlled by different external stakeholders. Therefore, many current studies attach great importance to how enterprises use CSR activities to strategically respond to the demands of external non-market stakeholders(such as the government, local communities and consumers). In addition,as the government controls the most critical resources,it has a great impact on the survival and development of enterprises. As a result, companies have an incentive to connect with corrupt officials and bribe them for support. At the same time, inevitably, the corruption of government officials will also have a great impact on the business strategy of enterprises.Although more and more scholars believe that CSR and corporate political activities are interwoven, there is little discussion in existing literature on whether the bribery and corruption relationship between enterprises and officials will affect the performance of CSR behavior, and if so,what kind of impact it has.As the world’s second largest economy,China’s central government hopes to change the development pattern of economic growth through harmony and ecological civilization construction,so it encourages companies to participate in CSR activities.Besides,China also faces the same corruption problems as other countries in the world,so China is an ideal background for this research. This paper focuses on the relationship between bribery and corruption of enterprises and officials, and explores how the relationship between bribery and corruption of enterprises and officials affects the performance of CSR behaviors of Chinese enterprises,so as to fill in this important research gap.In this paper, the author use RSK social responsibility overall score as a CSR on the company performance measure, and the use of corporate entertainment travel costs as the relationship between the company and corrupt officials bribery measure, based on Chinese listed companies between 2008 and 2015 samples to the empirical analysis of the above issues. The results show that :(1)the bribery and corruption relationship between enterprises and officials will have a significant negative impact on CSR performance. The conclusion has been proved to be robust by a series of tests.(2)The bribery corruption relationship between enterprises and officials will be negatively correlated with the CSR performance of the company, which is more sensitive to state-owned enterprises.(3)Regional institutional environment has an impact on the relationship between bribery-corruption and CSR performance. When we re-estimated the model by dividing the sample into subsamples of developed regions and less developed regions based on the location of corporate headquarters,we found that in developed regions,CSR practices were less sensitive to the impact of bribery and corruption relationships between companies and officials.(4)Anti-corruption campaign can reduce the negative correlation between bribery and corruption between enterprises and officials and CSR performance. |
