The Changes And Causes Of The Contradictions Between Germany And The United States (2017-2020)

The alliance between Germany and the United States plays a very important role in the whole Atlantic alliance.Since 2017,the German-US relations have experienced great fluctuations,and the unstable factors in the bilateral relations have increased.Influenced by the three factors of strategy and interests,geopolitics and foreign policy,there are great differences between Germany and the United States in three aspects:internal security cognition,external competitors and external interest demands.The existing contradictions between the two sides begin to intensify.At the same time,there are many new differences.The sense of distrust between Germany and the United States intensifies.This paper finds that although there are many differences and contradictions between Germany and the United States,the alliance has not changed in essence.In the German US alliance,because the United States is in the leading position and Germany is in the subordinate position,the change of American foreign policy has a greater impact on the trend of bilateral relations.When the United States adopts a radical unilateralist policy,German US relations will become tense;When the United States returns to the policy of multilateralism,the relationship between Germany and the United States will tend to ease.Therefore,the important condition for the tension between Germany and the United States is that the United States adopts a foreign policy contrary to Germany.Correspondingly,if the United States adopts a foreign policy opposite to Germany,the relationship between the two sides will be eased.In the part of case analysis,this paper takes the differences and contradictions between Germany and the United States on NATO defense spending,US withdrawal,Iran nuclear issue,China issue and Russia issue as examples to test the above views.
