The United States is the earliest constitutional democracy in modern history, and the Americans have used the Constitution to determine the principle of the political system of separation of powers and checks and balances and to achieve rapid development of the country. However,in recent years, there have been frequent social chaos in the United States, extreme right-wing forces, racism and populism have scumbags, violent incidents have occurred from time to time, and the problem of social rift is serious.Under the influence of veto-type politics, the normal operation of democratic politics has been greatly affected. The polarization and pluralistic value demands within the government make the efficiency of policy formulation and output very inefficient, and the groundless arguments and confrontations waste a lot of government energy and raise the cost of the system. This article attempts to explore the reasons for the emergence of veto politics in the United States, mainly summarized in the following aspects.First, the institutional design of power checks and balances has led to chaotic distribution of rights, which has laid the groundwork for the emergence of veto-type politics.Second, the interference of interest groups in political operations makes public policy no longer protect the interests of the majority of the people, thus intensifying social contradictions.Third, the polarization of party strife under the two-party system has polarized the government and parliament, affecting the normal operation of the democratic system.Fourth, the US electoral system has aggravated the polarization of society, and the electoral system is not only one of the carriers of the reasons for the emergence and development of political polarization, but also radiates the competitive tendencies contained in the election process into people’s social life.Fifth, the ideological trends and ideological fault lines in American society have also exacerbated the phenomenon of political polarization.Veto politics has seriously threatened the normal functioning of the American democratic system and plunged the United States into a whirlpool of political decay. In the end,I try to analyze why the politics of checks and balances in the United States eventually moves towards veto politics. |
