| Peasant differentiation refers to the process of changing from consistency to heterogeneity within the peasant group, which changes the peasants’ living standards, value concepts and interest relations, and reconstructs the social relationship network and communication logic of the peasants. The differences between farmers in various aspects have emerged, which strengthens the comparison and competition among farmers, and the greater the differentiation of farmers, the greater the heterogeneity and conflict of public needs. With the development of urbanization, the urban-rural mobility of farmers, the changes in land management relations, and the changes in the livelihood mode and division of labor of family members, the differentiation of farmers has changed from the traditional distinction between large and small farmers to differentiated farmers with different characteristics, different needs, and different expectations for the government. Therefore, studying the trust of farmers in local governments under the situation of land acquisition is of great significance for coordinating urban and rural development, improving the level of trust in local governments, and promoting the fairness of the whole society, and has become a hot spot in academic research. With the deepening of China’s urbanization and modernization, the number of land-expropriated farmers is also increasing. The large number of agricultural population has been transformed into non-agricultural population, which has promoted the urban-rural mobility of farmers and exacerbated the differentiation phenomenon in China’s rural areas. So,what are the specific manifestations of the differentiation of peasants whose land has been expropriated? How much do different farmers trust local governments? How exactly does the peasant divide affect the trust of the government, and does social equity play an intermediary role in this process? To this end, this paper takes the differentiation of farmers whose land has been expropriated as the starting point, takes the 2016 CFPS data as the data source, and conducts a field survey in a village in Dingxi City,Gansu Province,to comprehensively analyze the differentiation of farmers in terms of structure and behavior under the action of land acquisition, including the representation of occupation, income, social status, democratic participation and mutual assistance behavior.Further, taking rational choice theory and social capital theory as the guiding theory, the explanatory sequence in the mixed research method is used to explore the impact of the differentiation of farmers on the trust of local governments, and the mechanism of farmer differentiation on local government trust is explored by using the Bootstrap mediation effect test method. The study found that(1)the differentiation of land-expropriated farmers affects government trust.Work type, income, social status, democratic participation and mutual aid behavior are closely related to local government trust. The differentiation of farmers’ income and social status poses a threat to the trust of local governments. The lower the socioeconomic status, the lower the trust in the local government. The less participation of farmers in elections and the mutual assistance of villagers will reduce the trust in the local government, resulting in a greater impact on the local government.Interpersonal barriers;when the farmers have no hope of breaking the stratification, they begin to question the ability of the government, resulting in a sense of distrust of the local government.(2)Peasant differentiation affects social equity. The pursuit of social fairness by peasants is difficult to achieve in the face of the objective reality of peasant differentiation, and the differentiation of peasants brings about differences in various resources and weakens the peasants’ feelings of social fairness.(3)Social equity is positively correlated with the trust of expropriated farmers in local governments. The more farmers feel social fairness, the more they trust the local government departments.Fair experiences and feelings are a prerequisite for individuals to support government, and inequalities in rights and opportunities will lead to widespread discontent and pose a huge threat to social stability and trust in government.(4)Social equity plays a part of the mediating role in the differentiation of farmers and the trust of local governments. The differentiation of farmers can not only directly affect the credibility of local governments, but also indirectly affect the trust of local governments through the use of social equity. The results of this study mean that the government can integrate rural society and improve the level of trust of farmers in the government by improving governance capabilities, increasing farmers’ incomes, improving distribution policies, deepening institutional reforms, and dealing with social inequities and unbalanced development brought about by peasant differentiation in a timely manner. |
