Over the past 20 years, international higher education has developed tremendously, and the number of international students coming to China has risen linearly. In the process of studying abroad, academic adaptation is crucial to the student experience and academic achievement of international students. The purpose of this study is to clarify the dimensions of academic adaptation and to dynamically demonstrate the process of academic adaptation of international students coming to China. This research uses a qualitative research method,in-depth interviews with 20 foreign students to collect research data, adopt open coding, and classify and code according to difficulties in academic adaptation and coping strategies. In this study, the academic adaptation of Chinese students in the future can be divided into two parts: academic level and social level, which contains six sub-dimensions,namely curriculum, teaching, evaluation, research, language, and interpersonal communication. And international students coming to China have encountered academic obstacles mainly in these six sub-dimensions.1.At the course level, most international students complain about the unreasonable course setting and the obscure quantification of the course content.2.On the teaching level, international students cannot adapt to the entire student-centered teaching method and the lack of interaction between teachers and students.3.In terms of evaluation, international students believe that the evaluation criteria are unclear, the lack of teacher feedback and the different evaluation systems have caused a series of academic difficulties.4.At the research level, collecting research materials and presenting innovations in papers are the main challenges facing international students.5.On the language level, international students not only need to face their own difficulties in English and Chinese, but also need to adapt to the English accents of teachers and classmates.6.At the level of interpersonal communication, international students point out that there are some obstacles in their interaction with their tutors and other international students and Chinese students.International students in China have adopted different coping strategies for different difficulties. These coping strategies can be divided into four categories: changing the environment, changing oneself, evading and cold treatment. When international students face inconsistencies between their tutors and their research directions and the speed of teacher lectures, international students generally choose strategies to change the environment, but changes to the environment rarely occur. In most cases, overseas Chinese students will adopt strategies to change themselves, such as reading books,self-study,etc.to make up for their lack of knowledge or ability to adapt to the environment. And in the case where it is difficult to borrow English books and a large number of reading tasks in the library, international students choose to escape and will not take any measures. In the face of a slightly larger number of English accents and courses, international students adopt cold treatment. As time progresses, the difficulties gradually disappear.
