The number of elderly people aged 65 and over reached 150 million in China, accounting for 10.8% of the total population in 2016.At the same time,China’s aging population is characterizes by rapid growth, old age before being rich, aging and unbalanced development. The aging situation is becoming more and more serious. In this context, the growth rate of China’s resident consumption rate is not satisfactory.Since 1978,China’s resident consumption rate has shown a declining trend as a whole. In recent years,it has remained at a low level of 38%.Compared with developed countries and some developing countries, the level is also lower. The aging of the population has positive and reverse effects on consumption. In order to explore the specific effects of population aging on residents’ consumption, this paper conducts a study on the effects of aging on residents’ consumption, hoping to provide some reference for policy formulation in the context of China’s aging population.Firstly, this article introduces the situation of aging population and the status of residents’ consumption, and then analyzes the theoretical mechanism of the impact of population aging on residents’ consumption in China.Subsequently, the paper uses 1987~2015 time series data to establish multiple linear regression models to empirically analyze the impact of China’s aging population on residents’ consumption. On this basis, the residents’ consumption is divided into eight categories according to the classification standards of China Statistical Yearbook: food, clothing, residence, living equipment and supplies, transportation and communication, culture, education and entertainment, health care and other. This paper uses the grey correlation analysis method to further study the impact of aging on the consumption structure(eight types of consumer expenditures). The result shows that the regression coefficient of the population aging variable is-1.63,and passes the 5% significant level, which indicates that the elderly dependency ratio had a significant negative impact on household consumption rates in China. At the same time, consumption expenditures for living, health care, and living facilities and supplies are heavily influenced by the ageing population. Finally, this article put forwards several policy suggestions on increasing the residents’ consumption according to the research conclusions, hoping to provide some reference for China’s policy formulation.
