Materialistic values mean that individuals regard the possession and pursuit of property as the central value of life,believe that the accumulation of material determines personal achievements,and believe that the possession of material wealth leads to happiness.Previous studies have shown that materialistic values negatively predict mental health status.Relevant foreign studies show that adolescents aged 8-12 have begun to show a tendency to pursue material things.Children are the future of our country.Therefore,it is of great significance to pay attention to the development of children’s materialistic values and subjective well-being.In order to evaluate children’s materialistic values,this study made localized revision based on the Materialistic Values Scale(MVS)compiled by Richins and Dawson(1992),and finally formed the materialistic Values Scale for Children in China.Through this scale and the combination of core self-evaluation and subjective well-being scale,the development status and relationship of materialistic values,core self-evaluation and subjective well-being are further investigated.The following studies were conducted:In study 1,the materialistic values scale was revised.A sixth grade primary school in Shenyang,Liaoning province was selected and 105 questionnaires were distributed.All the questionnaires were collected with an effective recovery rate of 100%.There were 61 boys and44 girls.Ages 11 to 12.In study 2,primary school students in grade 5 and 6 were randomly selected as the survey objects,and a total of 456 questionnaires were sent.After removing a series of invalid questionnaires such as missing values and extreme values,452 effective questionnaires were obtained.After statistics,the actual validity of this study was 99.12%.The relationship among children’s materialistic values,core self-evaluation and subjective well-being was studied.The following results are obtained from the collation and analysis of the survey data:(1)The newly revised children’s materialistic values Scale has good reliability and validity and can be used as a measuring tool for children’s materialistic values.(2)Children’s materialistic values are at a low level,indicating that children have no strong desire for material.(3)The stronger children’s materialistic values are,the more negative their core selfevaluation is,which further reduces their subjective well-being.Finally,this paper puts forward the following educational suggestions for the above phenomena in the aspects of teachers,parents and society :(1)parents should clarify their responsibilities and correct their wrong ideas.(2)pay attention to psychological education,regular psychological evaluation.(3)Strengthen the supervision of online media to avoid harmful Internet information to children.(4)Enhance children’s core self-evaluation.It is hoped that these educational programs can reverse the current situation of materialistic values in children’s education,help children establish correct materialistic values,and have a healthy,happy and positive childhood.
