This paper focuses on Ye Dehui’s connoisseurship and collection of paintings and calligraphy works.Ye Dehui was a man of paradox.Firstly,he appeared conservative, but he was actively involved in the construction of public、space.Through collotype printing,he made his private collection available to the public. And he identified art works with the help of textual criticism.Secondly, through studying his“You Yi Zhi Yan”,“Guan Hua Bai Yong”and“Yi Yuan Liu Zhen”,which combined pictorial documents and relative literature in the studies,we find that Ye Dehui preferred the paintings of Bei Zong.At the same time,he also appreciated works of Nan Zong.He was an expert in textual criticism, his keen insight in connoisseurship is evident in the description of Guo Xi’s“Clearing Autumn Skies over Mountains and Valleys”.Finally,as Han people,he remained an adherent to Qing Dynasty and treasured paintings by the faithful Ming artists.Bada Shanren’s“Five Pines Mountain”in his collection is one of them.Ye Dehui’s paradoxes are actually results of his deep concern for traditional Chinese culture. In addition,it seems that his ideas on painting, connoisseurship and collection can be understood as an early form of modern connoisseurship.
