Self-control is an intermediate quality between moderation and indulgence. For practical reasons,self-control is aimed at those who are incapable of achieving the virtue of moderation, and it is both similar to and different from moderation. As a great philosopher, educator, and psychologist of the ancient Greek period,Aristotle's view of self-control not only had an important influence on the virtue ethics of ancient Greek society, but also has a positive impact on today's society.Aristotle's view of self-control was born in the ancient Greek period,in the midst of special social circumstances, influenced by the form of the state and the state polity in ancient Greece.According to the description of self-control in Aristotle's book “Nicomachean Ethics”,it is defined as follows: self-control is a quality of voluntarily choosing to resist the temptation of excessive carnal desires without being influenced by emotions and following the guidance of reason, under the attraction of strong carnal desires. The quality of self-control is characterized by voluntariness, autonomy, and constancy. In Aristotle's view of self-control,self-control is a quality describing the human will, which involves not only reason and desire in the soul, but also human emotion and disposition. Therefore, the relationship between reason and desire in the quality of self-control should be analyzed with a dialectical perspective in the process of research. In addition,self-control is also an intermediate quality, which can become uncontrollable by pursuing excessive or less than physical desires, and only pursuing moderate and necessary physical desires is the right behavior, which requires avoiding emotional influence when developing the quality of self-control,and considering self-control as a behavioral habit that is constantly trained.Plato believed that a righteous city-state must require the virtue of temperance, while Aristotle believed that a happy city-state requires the quality of self-control,which he regarded as the basic quality for the attainment of temperance. The relationship between self-control,temperance,and human happiness is that self-control is the key to temperance, and self-control is the basis for the attainment of human happiness,or “second-class happiness”.Although Aristotle's view of self-control is a spiritual product of the ancient Greek period,it is also needed today in the age of peace.Self-control is not only a quality based on nature, but also a fundamental quality for people to achieve “second-class happiness”,and it still has an important value for the happiness of nature and human life in contemporary society. The contemporary value of Aristotle's idea of self-control is reflected in the following: first,to urge people in the new era to maintain the character of self-control and be a person who is not swayed by external material pleasures;second,to urge people in the new era to insist on self-discipline,moderate Internet access,be a person with the quality of Internet civilization, and take the social responsibility of maintaining the safety of cyberspace;third,to urge people in the new era to protect Thirdly,to encourage people in the new era to protect wild animals, control their desire to eat and drink, and promote the harmonious coexistence between human beings and nature.
