James Joyce is a world-renowned novelist.Joyce's A Portrait of An Artist as a Young Man is generally regarded as a semi-autobiographical Bildungsroman.,which is also an experimental work of stream of consciousness. The recurrent repetition and the aesthetic significance that it embodies are worth further exploration.Vocabulary and sentence repetition and image repetition in A Portrait of An Artist as a Young Man will be analyzed based on Miller's theory of repetition.Vocabulary and sentence repetition can be classified into two aspects, which are the repetition of sense and impression and the repetition of features in Stephen's grown-up.Color,air,smell and sound are four aspects to illustrate sense and impression, they aim to stress the inner activities of Stephen. The typical vocabulary and sentence reflected in Stephen's childhood, youth, adolescence and maturity underlines his grown-up features and his inner monologue. Both of them reveal protagonists inner contradiction and his growth process.Image repetition mainly includes dynamic image repetition and static image repetition.Female characters' repetition embodies Stephen's pursuit of beauty;birds' repetition represents Stephen's gradually awakening consciousness;names' repetition reflects the progress of self-awareness;music's repetition reveals his pursuit of art.No matter Stephen's self-quest or his pursuit of beauty and art,all lay a foundation for his final choice, which is art. Moreover, the repetition not only deconstructs the traditional linear narrative structure and constructs the new cycle structure, but also deepens the theme of self-request in Bildungsroman. The research on novel's vocabulary and sentence repetition and image repetition reflects the beauty of rhythm, beauty of truth and beauty of structure.
