A Study Of Metaphorical Translation In Zhang Guruo's Translation Of Tess Of The D'Urbervilles From The Perspective Of Conceptual Metaphor

Hardy has superb creative art in the field of novel creation,and has made important achievements in this field.He is called “Shakespeare in the novel circle” by later generations.As one of Hardy's excellent works,there are a lot of metaphors in Tess of the D'Urbervilles.Conceptual metaphor is that human beings take the conceptual domain formed by their own experience as the source domain and map it to unfamiliar and abstract things(target domain).Therefore,conceptual metaphor is based on the correlation between our experience.As a cognitive tool,conceptual metaphor is indispensable to understand the unique artistic charm of Tess of the D'Urbervilles.According to the theory of conceptual metaphor,metaphor is not limited to language level,in other words,it is not limited to vocabulary level.Therefore,the process of human thinking is basically metaphorical.There are many Chinese translations of Tess of the D'urbervilles,among which Zhang Guruo's translation is the most accepted in China.By means of qualitative analysis,this paper interprets the conceptual metaphor in the original text,and attempts to explore whether Zhang Guruo has accurately realized the cognitive function of conceptual metaphor in the original text in the process of Chinese translation.The results show that: when dealing with the translation of metaphor,Zhang Guruo mainly adopts domestication strategies to deal with conceptual metaphor,which basically reproduces the cognitive function of conceptual metaphor in the original text.Therefore,based on the similarities of English national culture and experience,if translators take foreignization into account,their cognitive function will be compensated.Finally,it is hoped that this study can be helpful to the study of conceptual metaphor translation in other literary novels.
