A Study Of Mussorgsky's Opera Boris Godunov

“Boris Godunov” is a very important and famous opera work of Musorgsky,at the same time it is also an outstanding work in the history of Russian opera and even in the history of world opera.It has great influence in the Russian music circle in the 19 th century and has high artistic attainments after its birth.“Bosley Godunov” represents the real historical story in Russia,which tells the real historical story of Russian farmers’ resistance against the background of the power struggle between the evil Russian czar Boris Godunov and the monk Gregory.With the help of history,Mussorgsky expressively showed the significance of historical themes inspired by the current Russian society in the 19 th century.In the opera,the masses played an important role,Mussorgsky created a huge masses of people,not only depicted the brave and indomitable Russian people,but also deeply depicted each independent character,excavated the most real feelings of the characters,reflected the national characteristics of the opera,also showed the superb creative skills and profound ideological connotation of Mussorgsky’s opera.In terms of the research process of the opera “Boris Godunov”,the author takes the national thought of the opera as the core and divides it into three chapters: the Russian society and its opera in the 19 th century,the music history of Mussorgsky,and the music creation of the opera “Boris Godunov”.The first chapter is about the Russian society and its opera in the 19 th century,which mainly introduces the social and cultural phenomena of Russia in the 19 th century and the national characteristics of Russian opera in the 19 th century,in order to have a deeper understanding of the background of “Boris Godunov”.The second chapter is the related contents of Mussorgsky and “Boris Godunov”,which mainly covering Mussorgsky’s life and music creation,as well as the composer Mussorgsky’s exploration of opera creation,so as to better understanding of the artistic features of “Boris Godunov”.Based on the first two chapters,the third chapter analyzes the music creation of the opera from the music theme,harmony and recitation in the opera “Boris Godunov”.The author first analyzes the musical themes of the characters in the opera,including the penetration of the theme of czar Boris Godunov,the development of the theme of the monk Gregory,and the changes of the public image.Secondly,it explores the harmony in opera from the continuous harmony in the vertical structure,the linear harmony in the horizontal development and the colorful harmony vocabulary three aspects.In the end,the representative recitative aria in the opera are selected to analyze the emotional changes and psychological characteristics of the characters.At the end of the article,namely the fourth section of the third chapter,the ideological connotation is profoundly interpreted and thought in the opera “Boris Godunov” so as to understand this great work that carries Mussorgsky’s strong national feelings more deeply.
