James Macmillan 1959 is a famous composer and conductor in England.Now,"there are three themes that are widely recognized in academia to influence and identify the baseline of Mc Millan works,namely Catholic spirit,Scottish identity and social consciousness." The Catholic spirit is originated from Mc Millan's own Catholic belief,Scottish identity comes from the persistence of folk music.Social consciousness is more about Macmillan trying to express a social problem with music."Social consciousness" is an abstract concept attribute,which is more existing in the composer's creative view,value view and understanding view,which is difficult to present in the specific composition technique.Therefore,this paper takes the "Catholic spirit" and "Scottish identity" as the baseline of this study to identify the three characteristics of Macmillan music works,and tries to explain the performance of "Catholic spirit" and "Scottish identity" in the composition technique level.Through analyzing and summarizing the common pitch relationship in Macmillan music works,studying the structure and development of music theme,studying the music language and style characteristics of macmilan,discussing the source,construction logic,structure relationship and the creation ideas behind the music theme in his works.In addition,the innovation of the instrument writing in Mc Millan is analyzed.The first chapter mainly describes the composer's life,music outlook and music style;The second chapter mainly analyzes the organizational structure of the high sound in the works;Chapter three studies the construction characteristics of music theme in the works;Chapter four starts with music materials,and studies the writing style of the accessories of Mc Millan.
