Richard Hoggart,a British scholar,is an outstanding representative of cultural research. The contemporary cultural research center of Birmingham University founded by him has introduced mass culture into cultural research.Cultural research has gradually become a special discipline, embarked on the road of institutionalization, promoted the development of cultural research and enhanced the influence of cultural research.Richard Hoggart published the use of literacy in 1957.He inherited the traditions of Marxism and British empiricism, and creatively constructed cultural theory based on his own experience. In this book,he focuses on the current situation and changes of the working class culture, and expresses his ideal appeal to the working class culture. Therefore, the use of literacy is often regarded as a milestone in the history of cultural research, which also lays the foundation of British cultural research. This paper analyzes the theoretical source of Richard Hoggart’s working class cultural view, the development context of the theory and the process of cultural research towards institutionalization. In addition, starting from the use of literacy,Richard Hoggart studied the youth subculture,a marginalized group of society, and opened a new field of research on the culture of the working class. It is undeniable that due to his own experience, although Richard Hoggart has deficiencies in the construction of working-class cultural theory,he has made indelible contributions to the creativity of cultural research and the institutionalization of cultural research. He created a new perspective of cultural research. At the same time, his interdisciplinary research method has become an important method of cultural research and had an important impact on Birmingham school.
