A Study Of Metaphorical Phenomena In English Tennis Reports

Metaphor has always been regarded as a figure of speech or a character.However,since Lakoff and Johnson put forward the idea of "conceptual metaphor" in the metaphor we live by,their research results have had a revolutionary influence on later studies of metaphor,and are considered as an important part of the development of cognitive linguistics.In his opinion,"the essence of metaphor is to understand and experience one kind of thing with another kind of thing." In other words,metaphor is a conceptual framework built on the basis of people's cognition.There have been many papers and academic achievements based on this view.Among them,there are some researches on sports news by using conceptual metaphor theory,but the research direction is mainly focused on the whole sports,while the research on specific sports items is relatively few.This study based on Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor,using qualitative and quantitative research methods,in the collection analysis of the four grand slam 14,2019 was the day after 538 related report found that exist in the tennis match reports in English ten kinds of typical types of conceptual metaphors,and it is further divided into 7 kinds of structural metaphor,2 kinds of ontology and one space metaphor.Seven structural metaphors,one spatial metaphor and two ontological metaphors are summarized.They are: war metaphor,journey metaphor,natural metaphor,industrial machinery metaphor,commercial and economic metaphor,medical metaphor,performance metaphor,upper and lower metaphor,container metaphor,and human metaphor.It is found that the war metaphor is mainly used to reflect the intensity and antagonism of the competition.The journey metaphor is mainly used to reflect the stages and processes of the competition.The natural metaphor is mainly used to show the advantages and disadvantages of the players in the game.The typical model of spatial metaphor is "up is good,down is bad",which is mainly used to reflect the players' state and the factors that contribute to or influence the result of the game on the court.The common types of ontological metaphor are container metaphor and human metaphor.Container metaphor regards the game as a presence with boundaries and is mainly used to reflect the fit between players and the game,such as players entering or leaving the game.A player is in or out of play;The player is at a certain stage of the game,etc.Human metaphor ismainly used to show the situation with similar characteristics in the game through the degree of human's familiarity with itself and to construct the new cognitive domain through the most familiar knowledge domain of human.Based on the above findings,the translator can selectively use relevant metaphorical modes to construct the English version of tennis match report when writing the English version.At the same time,the corpus compiled according to the official reports of the four grand slams is helpful to expand the vocabulary of tennis news and provide help for the standardization of tennis match reports in the future.
