| There have been many studies showing the importance of public digital terminals in the context of e-government policies.However,those who do not fully acquire or understand IT knowledge cannot obtain this convenient e-government service fairly,especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly,which will limit the ability of citizens to participate directly in society.The success of public digital terminals depends to a large extent on whether citizens are willing to accept new information technologies and,on the other hand,on the availability of public terminal interfaces.Focusing on a particular corner of the research,this study engages a theoretical model to investigate how user interface design impacts the behavioral intention of older people to use hospital self-service registration terminals.To this end,we adopted the Nielsen–Shneiderman Heuristics with 14 evaluation heuristics to evaluate user interface characteristics,and divided them into three categories,which influence the variables from the Unified Technology Acceptance and Use Theory(UTAUT).We collected experimental data from 78 elderly Chinese people and conducted an empirical study of the model.The results validate the assumption that the user interface design of the self-service registration terminal significantly affects the acceptance of the elderly.Through the weight calculation of the structural equation model,we propose an evaluation index of the elderly’s intention to use the self-service registration machine.Based on these design strategies and the user-centered interface design process,two design iterations were performed on the self-service registration machine.The feasibility and stability of the combination of structural equation modeling,heuristic evaluation and focus group qualitative description in the design practice are verified.Finally,the countermeasures to improve the acceptance of public terminals by the elderly are discussed from the macro and micro levels.The study findings provide insights into the management and design perspectives of e-government planners. |
