| Purpose:Aerobic endurance refers to the ability of the body to use large muscle groups to maintain dynamic movement for a long time.Mental Fatigue(MF)is a psychophysiology state caused by high cognitive intensity over a long period of time, which has been shown to have a negative impact on aerobic endurance performance.Music intervention is a common method to eliminate mental fatigue, and has the advantages of safety and convenience. However,it remains unclear whether musical interventions can effectively mitigate the negative effects of mental fatigue on aerobic endurance performance. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of pre-exercise music intervention on aerobic endurance performance after mental fatigue.Methods:19 male college students from Shanghai University of Sport(age 21.9±2.4yrs,height 178.4±4.3cm,weight 75.0±8.6kg,body fat rate 17.1±4.9%,maximal oxygen uptake 45.8±7.2 ml/min/kg,maximum oxygen uptake, maximum aerobic power of 268.1±28.6W)completed four tests on a cycle ergometer, including one incremental load test and three constant load tests. The following different interventions were randomly given before three constant load tests:the first time without any intervention(blank group),the second induction of MF after 5 min sit-in+warm-up 3min(MF group),and after the third induction of MF,music intervention was performed during 5 min sit-in+warm-up 3min(MF music group).Mental fatigue was induced by the 45 min Stroop task.Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)and Chinese version of Mood State Scale(BRUMS-C)were used to record fatigue(VAS-MF、BRUMS-C-F),motivation(VAS-M)and vigor(BRUMS-C-V)scores before and after mental fatigue and 5 min after mental fatigue.Heart rate(HR)and rating of perceived exertion(RPE)were recorded during constant exercise and immediately after exercise, and the exhaustion time was recorded.Data were presented in the form of Mean±standard deviation(Mean±SD).Two-factor(Treatment×time)repeated measurement analysis of variance(two-way repeated-measures ANOVA)was used to test subjects’subjective feelings(such as VAS-MF,VAS-M,BRUMS-C,etc.),RPE per minute and immediately after exercise in three groups of constant load tests, and reaction time and accuracy of two groups of Stroop before and after the task.Paired t test was used to compare the delta values of subjective perception of MF group and MF music group immediately after Stroop task and 5 min after Stroop task(e.g.,VAS-MF,VAS-M,BRUMS-C,etc.),and univariate repeated measurement analysis of variance was used to compare the exhaustion time of constant load test in each group.and significant level was selected as P<0.05.Results:The constant exhaustion time of blank group,MF group and MF music group were 358.1±121.0s,301.8±105.3s and 299.2±118.5s,respectively.Repeated measurement results showed that the exhaustion time of the MF group and the MF music group was significantly shorter than that of the blank group(P<0.001),but there was no significant difference between the MF group and the MF music group(P>0.05).Although there were no significant differences in subjective scores between the MF group and the MF music group(VAS-MF:F(1,18)=2.111,P=0.163,η~2=0.105;VAS-M:F(1,18)=0.832,P=0.374,η~2=0.044;BRUMS-C-F:F(1,18)=0.156,P=0.698,η~2=0.009;BRUMS-C-V:F(2,36)=17.977,P<0.001,η~2=0.500),but the mental fatigue score was lower in the MF music group(P=0.27;ES=0.262)vigor score(P=0.24;ES=0.278)and motivation scores(P=0.27;ES=0.381)were higher. In addition, compared with the MF group, the RPE of 2nd and 3rd min in the MF music group had a downward trend in constant exercise. Conclusion:Although pre-exercise listening to music after MF was not enough to counter the negative effect of MF on subsequent aerobic endurance performance,it can weaken the negative effect of MF on motivation, vigor and subsequent RPE in cycling constant tests to exhaustion. |
