| The origin and relationship of Tanka with other ethnic groups in Southeast China have long been the focus of research in the history of Southeast ethnic groups, regional social and cultural history, and ethnic group studies. In ancient times, there has been a long-standing debate on the three hypotheses of the origin of the Han population in North China, the origin of the southern indigenous Baiyue people, and their mixture. This study conducted genetic research on the Tanka population in 11 villages in Fujian,China,by randomly sampling 197 individuals and obtaining whole-genome sequencing data of the Tanka population, which were merged with modern and ancient East Asian population data.Based on statistical models and related algorithms, the genetic origin of the Tanka people and their interactions with modern and ancient surrounding populations were studied.PCA results showed that the Tanka population have a closer genetic relationship with the southern indigenous populations, including the Han population,Tai-Kadai population,Hmong-Mien population, and Austronesian population. The refined PCA and ADMIXTURE analysis results showed that the Tanka population have strong genetic drift and exhibit the characteristics of an isolated population, confirming the unique genetic differences of the present-day Tanka population resulting from cultural customs that prohibit intermarriage between Tanka and non-Tanka people in history. In addition,f3 and f4 tests showed that the Tanka population have a close affinity with Taiwan’s indigenous people and Southeast Han populations, and there is a very close genetic connection between the Tanka population and the She population, confirming the historical records of a group of ancient people in the Yellow River Basin in the north who migrated southward and gradually formed the present-day She and Tanka population through long-term migration and integration.Through ancestor inference based on the qpAdm and ALDER models, that about 2300 years ago, there was a mixing event between the population from the Yellow River Basin in the north and the southern indigenous people, leading to a higher proportion of northern lineage in the Tanka population.Based on the exploration and application of statistical models and related algorithms in the genetics of Fujian Tanka population, the research results support the hypothesis that the Tanka population originated from a mixed northern and southern origin. These findings provide new insights into the Chinese ethnic origins project and are crucial for understanding ancient Chinese history and culture evolution. They also offer valuable information for studying human origins and genetic diversity. |
