The rapid urbanization and unprecedented human utilization of space have resulted in a threat to ecological security. In response,China has adopted a coordinated approach to development and protection by optimizing the layout of ecological space and establishing a control system, thereby promoting symbiosis between human and natural systems. However,a lack of theoretical research and practical experience has resulted in certain challenges. The current management approach based on controlled protection fails to meet the high-quality development needs of high-intensity development area. Therefore,It is of theoretical and practical significance to carry out multi-functional management optimization of ecological space, taking into account spatial protection and sustainable utilization, and reshaping the multidimensional value of national territory. This study focuses on the scientific issue of multi-functionality of ecological space and aims to improve the theoretical understanding of multi-functional ecological space management, based on research on ecological space and ecosystem service functions. The study adopts a perspective of coupled social-ecological system and considers the spatial characteristics of high-intensity development area.Taking Jiaxing City as the study area, the scope and categories of ecological space are precisely identified, and the changes of spatial and temporal patterns are analyzed.A multifunctional indicator system of ecological space is constructed to evaluate the multifunctional evolution characteristics.Correlation analysis is applied to explore the trade-off/synergy relationships of spatial functions and their clustering effects. Finally, this study proposes the ecological space zoning optimization path and guarantee system to provide reference for the sustainable use and management optimization of ecological space. The research results indicate that,(1)this study objectively and comprehensively analyzes the characteristics and internal logic of spatial multifunctionality from the perspective of coupled social-ecological system, and identifies the special characteristics of ecological space in high-intensity development area.A research and analysis framework of global integration, overall evaluation, and classification optimization is proposed.(2)The ecological space area in Jiaxing City continues to decline, with arable land and urban ecological space being the main components of ecological space. The overall fragmentation of ecological space increased while the agglomeration decreased.(3)The multifunctional evaluation system shows that the spatial and temporal variation of ecological functions in Jiaxing city is significant, with the regulating function being high in the south and low in the north, and it overall decline from 2000 to 2018.Social functions show a decreasing center-periphery trend along the inner city to the far suburbs, with a significant increase in function values and a narrowing trend of regional differences. The spatial clustering of supply functions is not significant, which increases overall. On the whole, the change in spatial development and utilization patterns due to urbanization development has led to differences in multifunctional changes in ecological space over time.(4)The interactive characteristics of ecological-spatial functions are recognized from different perspectives.Overall, the supply-regulatory function shows a synergistic relationship that first strengthens and then weakens. The trade-off relationship of social-regulatory function gradually decreases, and the relationship of supply-social function changes from weak synergy to weak trade-off.Spatially,the trade-off/synergy relationship of functional change is spatially heterogeneous. The SOM analysis shows that the composite and interrelationship of multi-functional are manifested as spatial clusters, and the spatial distribution of “clusters” is related to ecological space types and locations.(5)An optimized zoning idea is proposed under the orientation of “highlighting dominant functions” and “promoting functional synergy” to achieve spatial multi-functional integration. The natural resource structural optimization system, the multi-scale spatial empowerment system, and the diversified governance system are implemented as the guarantee system.
