Objective:Different kinds and contents of carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone were fabricated. The mechanical and thermal properties were tested and compared with pure titanium for the application of non-metallic dental implant materials. Methods:Continuous carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone, short carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone and polyetheretherketone were fabricated by hot press molding and injection molding method. The mechanical properties of composites were determined by adjusting specific parameters, and the composites were made into the size required for mechanical property testing. Results:The strength of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone reached the same level as that of pure titanium.Meanwhile, the elastic modulus was only half of pure titanium, which can effectively avoid the stress shielding effect caused by excessive elastic modulus. The elastic modulus of short carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone was close to bone tissue, and the strength reached 3-4 times of polyetheretherketone. The elastic modulus and strength of polyetheretherketone were lower than the cortical bone and pure titanium. Conclusions:The elastic modulus, strength and hardness of short carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone and pure polyetheretherketone are lower than that of pure titanium. The strength and hardness of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone are close to pure titanium, and the elastic modulus is only half of pure titanium. The mechanical strength and the biomechanical compatibility with bone tissue of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone are guaranteed as implant material.
