| Since Reform and Opening-up,China’s economy has maintained rapid growth and achieved remarkable achievements in economic development. However, the past extensive growth mode has also brought serious ecological problems, causing high attention from government departments. In recent years,China has proposed a series of environmental regulation policies around the concept of green development, with a view to maintaining green water and green mountains, and achieving harmonious coexistence between human beings and nature. However, environmental regulations will,to a certain extent, affect the production and operation of enterprises, thereby affecting the supply and level of employment.China has a huge population and an abundant labor force. On the premise of protecting the ecological environment, achieving higher quality and full employment is an important content of ensuring people’s livelihood, and has far-reaching practical significance for achieving the goal of socialist modernization and promoting common prosperity.Based on a review of relevant research findings, the paper explores the relationship between environmental regulation and labor employment at the corporate level.Applying a two-way fixed effect model and using 244 A-share listed companies in China from 2013 to 2020 as the research object, the paper explores the impact of environmental regulation on the overall employment level of enterprises. In order to further analyze the differences in the impact relationship between the two under different circumstances, this article conducts a heterogeneity analysis in five situations, and further analyzes the effects of technological innovation on the impact of environmental regulation on employment level, and draws the following conclusions:(1)At the overall level of enterprises nationwide, environmental regulation has a negative inhibitory effect on labor employment.(2)Environmental regulation has a negative inhibitory effect on the employment of labor with both low and high education levels, but it has a greater inhibitory effect on the employment of labor with low education levels.(3)Environmental regulation can inhibit the employment level of lowskilled labor, and have no significant positive impact on the employment of skilled labor.(4)Environmental regulation has a negative inhibitory effect on the level of labor employment in both state-owned and non state-owned enterprises, and it has a greater inhibitory effect on non state-owned enterprises. At the same time, its inhibitory effect on the employment of central state-owned enterprises is higher than its inhibitory effect on the overall state-owned enterprises.(5)Compared to non heavily polluting industries, environmental regulation has a stronger inhibitory effect on the employment level of enterprises in heavily polluting industries.(6)From a regional perspective, environmental regulation has a greater inhibitory effect on the employment level in the eastern region.(7)Environmental regulation can have an impact on labor employment levels by promoting technological innovation.Based on the conclusions of the paper, relevant countermeasures and suggestions are proposed. |
