A Study On The Body Aesthetics Of Female Dress In The Middle Tang Dynasty

Body is the most direct representation of a person’s inner thoughts,emotions and personality.As the outer covering of the body,clothing is a perceptual presentation of the external and internal beauty of an individual,also an intuitive reflection of the degree of civilization in a specific historical era.It is well known that the Middle Tang Dynasty was an important transition period in ancient China.After the An Lushan Rebellion,although the whole country was formally unified,it was no longer as prosperous and stable as it was.In the turbulent times of war,constant changes took place in all fields of society.In accordance with the changes,the social status of women in the Middle Tang Dynasty has gradually decreased.This can be seen partially from the changes in clothing as a barometer of the times.Based on this,this paper intends to combine the political,economic and cultural background of the Middle Tang Dynasty,and from the perspective of body aesthetics,to conduct a systematic study on the concept of women’s clothing in the Middle Tang Dynasty,trying to gain insight into the spiritual and cultural life of the people of that epoch,and expand the fields and dimensions of aesthetic research on the Middle Tang Dynasty.This paper is divided into four chapters.Chapter One firstly discusses the influence of the historical background of the Middle Tang Dynasty on women’s clothing,and lays a foundation for the study of the body aesthetic performance and aesthetic concept of women’s clothing in the Middle Tang Dynasty.Secondly,Chapter Two focuses on the body aesthetic performance of women’s clothing in the Middle Tang Dynasty.Clothing and the body are closely bonded,styles,colors and other representations of the clothing are also the revelation of body aesthetic performance.Based on the background of the Middle Tang Dynasty,women’s clothing presents distinctive features: the shape of the clothing is novel and unique,the style of wide robes and big sleeves,and the rich patterns of the clothing all show the body appearances of women at that time.Rich and complicated colors and diverse fabrics of the clothing provided people with a variety of choices,and brought people body and mental pleasure.Makeup of women in the Middle Tang Dynasty was glamorous and distinctive,they used gaudy and exaggerated makeup and accessories to cater to others,to bring sensory stimulation to aesthetic objects,and also show vitality of their own bodies.This chapter further discusses the body aesthetic characteristics displayed by women’s clothing in the Middle Tang Dynasty by analyzing the three features of their clothing above.Tracing appearances to explore the essence,the third chapter analyzes and dives deep into the body aesthetic concept contained in women’s clothing in the Middle Tang Dynasty.Aesthetic expression is the concrete manifestation of aesthetic concepts,and they complement each other.From the analysis of the body aesthetic characteristics displayed by women’s clothing in the Middle Tang Dynasty,it can be interpreted that women’s clothing in this period contains a yearning for a free and elegant body demeanor,the favor to the body desire with the thought of“gaudiness is beauty”,and the emphasis on the aesthetic concept of the pursuit of body freedom that takes unconventionality as beauty.Finally,based on the body aesthetic concept contained in women’s clothing in the Middle Tang Dynasty,the fourth chapter of this paper discusses the value of body aesthetics of women’s clothing in the Middle Tang Dynasty from the perspectives of the enlightenment of the body aesthetic consciousness of individual clothing and the influence on the body aesthetic culture of contemporary clothing.Taking the body aesthetics of women’s clothing in the Middle Tang Dynasty as the entry point to study the body aesthetic expression of women’s clothing at that time and explore the body aesthetic concept contained in it not only has profound significance for individual and contemporary clothing and body aesthetics,but also updates and expands the category of Chinese classical aesthetics to a certain extent,and provides a research case for interpreting the phenomenon of traditional Chinese aesthetic culture while using the basic theory of body aesthetics.
