With the increasing consumption of fossil fuels and the resultant rise in greenhouse gas emissions, humans are facing an unprecedented energy crisis and environmental pollution problem, leading to a series of global environmental events. In this context, the international community has been increasing research and development investment in low-carbon technology and related fields, with low-carbon development centered around reducing carbon dioxide emissions becoming a global consensus. The vigorous development of green electricity, including photovoltaic power,as a new and highly promising alternative energy source, has attracted widespread attention and development. However,China’s photovoltaic power generation still faces technological bottlenecks and difficulties, and promoting technological innovation to achieve low-carbon goals is therefore necessary. To achieve technological innovation, substantial funding support is essential. However, changes in policies in China’s photovoltaic industry have led to a gradual reduction in subsidies and a constant decrease in benchmark electricity prices, prompting photovoltaic companies to continuously improve their own strength to lay a solid foundation for future development. Therefore,in this context,it is necessary to study the effects of government subsidies and research and development investment on the financial performance of photovoltaic companies to assist the government in formulating more accurate policies and measures,as well as clarifying the future development direction of the photovoltaic industry. The implementation of policies such as "subsidiary reduction" has a tremendous impact on the photovoltaic industry, which has far-reaching implications for the operation and development of enterprises.Consequently, research and development activities are essential and critical for photovoltaic enterprises. However,a comprehensive review of existing literature reveals that scholars’ research primarily focuses on the relationship between government subsidies and corporate performance,as well as the relationship between R&D input and corporate performance. There is limited literature investigating R&D investment as a mediating variable, particularly exploring its mediating effect between government subsidies and the financial performance of photovoltaic enterprises. This article is based on domestic and foreign research, using theories of externalities, soft budget constraints, technological innovation, and information transfer. It studies the relationships between government subsidies and R&D investments, government subsidies and corporate financial performance, and R&D investments and corporate financial performance of 43 A-share photovoltaic enterprises. The study also examined the impact of enterprise nature on the relationship between government subsidies and R&D investments,as well as the mediating effect of R&D investments on the relationship between government subsidies and corporate financial performance. The aim of this paper is to provide reasonable suggestions for the government’s adjustment of policies for photovoltaic enterprises and to improve market competitiveness, using the above empirical research results. It also aims to provide theoretical support for improving the efficiency of government subsidy funds utilization, increasing corporate R&D innovation, and achieving stable growth in corporate performance. This article conducts an empirical study based on the establishment of a multiple linear regression model. The study found that government subsidies have a significant promoting effect on the R&D investments of photovoltaic enterprises, and this effect is even more significant for privately-owned enterprises.R&D investment also promotes the financial performance of photovoltaic enterprises, while government subsidies contribute to the financial performance of photovoltaic firms. The R&D investment has a partial mediating effect on the positive relationships between government subsidies,R&D investment, and financial performance of photovoltaic enterprises. In the end, based on the empirical research results, this article provides corresponding suggestions for the government, photovoltaic industry, and other related sectors.
