Nowadays, the aging degree of our country is becoming more and more serious, and communities,as the main component of cities, are closely related to the daily life of the elderly. As a green and environmentally friendly way of travel, walking can promote the physical and mental development of the elderly. However, the rapid development of urban urbanization has greatly impacted the traditional walking space. As the contradiction between the growing needs of the elderly and the lagging development of community construction environment is deepening,it is of great value to explore the community built environment from the perspective of walking friendliness for the elderly for the development of social construction. At present, there are many researches on community walkability at home and abroad, but there are few researches on the elderly population. The research methods are one-sided and single, and there is a lack of a walkability evaluation system combining macro and micro perspectives. This paper, based on the review of literature related to senior-friendly communities, community walkability evaluation, and the impact of community built environment on elderly walking activities, lays a theoretical foundation for the research on the optimization of community built environment walkability from the perspective of senior-friendly communities, summarizes the physiological and psychological characteristics and needs of the elderly,as well as the walking characteristics of the elderly. The corresponding relationship between the needs of the elderly and the built environment of the community is clarified, and the connotation of the built environment of the community from the perspective of the elderly friendly is further interpreted. The evaluation system is constructed from the three aspects of the built environment characteristics of the macro community planning, the medium service facility layout and the micro environmental quality.Through field research, three communities with significant differences in community planning, service facility layout and environmental quality were selected to analyze the current characteristics of their built environments.Basic information of the elderly group was obtained through questionnaire survey and interview, and the characteristics of their walking behavior were summarized. At the macro level, formula calculation and space syntax are used to analyze the attributes of community land planning and public space;at the meso-level,walking index is used to measure the service facilities;at the micro-level,questionnaire satisfaction is used to quantify the environmental quality. Finally, the common problems and characteristic problems of community walkability are summarized, and corresponding optimization strategies are proposed,in order to provide reference for the construction of age-friendly communities and the construction of age-appropriate in related fields.
