The auditorium is an important place for cultural and artistic exchanges, reflecting the comprehensive political, economic and cultural strength of the region and city, and representing the image of the region and city. With people’s growing spiritual and cultural needs, new requirements are constantly being put forward for the construction of auditoria, and China’s auditoria are showing the development trend of "one hall for multiple uses".In this context, the coupled rooms, with its unique acoustic characteristics, can achieve rich sound quality effects, bringing new design ideas for the acoustic design of multi-purpose halls, and the development of coupled reverberant room halls has certain practical significance. This paper focuses on the coupled sound field in auditoria, exploring the changing laws of the coupled rooms regulating the sound field of the audience hall, proposing the design methods, technical measures and usage practices of the coupled rooms, aiming to provide theoretical and practical references for the construction of coupled reverberant room halls. This paper first investigates and compares the status of theoretical research related to coupled acoustics at home and abroad, summarizes the research results in different directions, introduces the concept and acoustical characteristics of coupled rooms, and discusses their influence on the sound field of auditoria from four aspects: the layout position, volume size, opening size and internal materials of coupled rooms. Then, research on such halls that have been built at home and abroad is investigated to analyse the practices, the effects achieved and the experiences of success and failure in the projects, providing a basis for the next research and optimisation of coupled rooms. Then,on the basis of the theoretical and practical research related to coupled acoustics, simulation research experiments on coupled rooms are carried out.Taking the Changzhou Workers’ Cultural Palace Theatre as an example, the ODEON acoustic simulation software was used to investigate the effect of introducing a coupled reverberant room on the sound field of the auditorium, and to analyse the changes in objective sound quality parameters under different conditions with regard to the six parts of the coupled room:layout position, volume size, opening size, opening position, number of separations and internal materials, and to summarize the changes in the law of regulating the sound field of the auditorium. Finally, the design methods and control measures of the coupled room are summarized.Firstly, the design method of using the coupled room to achieve adjustable reverberation is proposed, which can be used in combination with other adjustable reverberation designs to improve the efficiency of multi-purpose halls.Second, the adverse factors that interfere with the coupling effect are analysed and corresponding control measures are proposed, including background noise, interface design and body shape design.Thirdly, technical measures are proposed in terms of the layout position of the coupled room, opening practices and internal material selection practices.Fourthly, two common usage methods are analysed and summarized for the use after completion: coupled room adjustable system and coupled room single mode.Based on the research results of coupled room adjustable sound field, this paper proposes the design methods, control measures, technical practices and usage modes of coupled rooms, which can provide reference for the theoretical research and engineering practice of coupled reverberant room halls.
