Traditional villages are important inheritance sites of traditional culture and possess a wealth of historical and cultural resources. In recent years, rapid urbanisation has led to a massive loss of population within villages, and traditional villages are gradually losing their former glory. The public space of traditional villages used to be the core place for villagers’ daily production and life, but with the passage of time, its inherent vitality is gradually being lost. With the introduction of the rural revitalisation strategy, national policies and orientations are gradually moving towards the development and construction of villages, and the issue of the morphology of traditional village public space has become a key focus in the field of rural studies. It is necessary to analyse and study the public space of villages in order to bring them to life. This paper takes the public space of traditional villages in Ji’an City,Jilin Province,as the object of study.Based on the theory of cultural ecology,it analyses and summarises the natural environment and cultural elements of villages in Ji’an City, classifies the villages, selects different forms of villages, analyses the morphology of their internal public space, analyses the problems of public space in different forms of villages, and uses the spatial gene theory and quantitative analysis methods such as spatial syntax to analyse the problems of public space.Based on the theory of spatial genes and the use of quantitative analysis methods such as spatial syntax,it is verified that different traditional villages have formed various forms of public space under the influence of various spatial genes,as well as different reorganisation sequences of public space between the central village and the surrounding natural tunnels.Combining the characteristics of different types of traditional villages, the spatial sequence of public space is reorganised to maximise the utilisation of public space in different types of traditional villages, and to link the central village with the surrounding natural tunnels to meet the villagers’ needs for public space. The study also proposes revitalisation strategies for the public spaces of traditional villages in Ji’an from three perspectives: natural substrate improvement and cultural heritage, road improvement and public space optimisation, and public space infrastructure and signage. The objective of this study is to propose different strategies for the revitalisation of public space in traditional villages in Ji’an from macroscopic to microscopic levels through the study of the current characteristics of public space morphology and spatial genetic influence mechanisms in traditional villages in Ji’an,and to provide theories and methods for the optimal development of public space in traditional villages in the eastern mountainous region.
