The experimental study on the combustion characteristics and charring performance of engineered bamboo(parallel strand bamboo and laminated bamboo)were carried out by using cone calorimeter. The influences of species, radiant heat flux and grain direction on various combustion characteristics parameters and charring rate are studied.A multi-level qualitative and quantitative fire risk assessment was carried out for engineered bamboo, and the cone calorimeter test data was associated with standard fire test data. The specific conclusions of this paper are as follows:(1)In the comparison of various combustion characteristics, parallel strand bamboo and laminated bamboo have their advantages and disadvantages, but both are better than CLT and LVL.In terms of radiant heat flux, the higher the radiant heat flux is,the shorter the ignition time of the engineered bamboo is,the larger the peak heat release rate is,the earlier the peak heat release rate appears, the more total heat release is produced, the larger the average mass loss rate is,the smaller the smoke rate is,the more CO2is produced, and the less CO is produced. As for the grain direction, the peak value of heat release rate parallel to grain is higher, the total heat release rate parallel to grain is higher, the yield of CO2parallel to grain is lower and the yield of CO parallel to grain is higher than those perpendicular to grain.(2)The law of instantaneous charring rate is basically consistent with that of basic charring rate:charring rate of laminated bamboo is higher than that of parallel strand bamboo; The higher the radiant heat flux is,the higher the charring rate is.The charring rate parallel to grain of the parallel strand bamboo is higher than that perpendicular to grain, and the charring rate perpendicular to grain of the laminated bamboo is higher than that parallel to grain, due to the characteristics of the delamination separation at high temperature of laminated bamboo. The deeper the depth is,the lower the charring rate is.(3)The predicted flashover time of the parallel strand bamboo and laminated bamboo under actual fire is 1045 s and 214 s,respectively, which means that parallel strand bamboo has better fire resistance than laminated bamboo in actual fire.AHP is used to carry out a multi-level qualitative and quantitative fire risk assessment of engineered bamboo. The results showed that the parallel strand bamboo has the lowest fire risk, and the laminated bamboo has the second, which suggests convincingly that the engineered bamboo is a safer and more reliable building material in terms of fire risk.(4)Compare the 30-40 min charring rate test data from parallel strand bamboo and laminated bamboo combustion furnace tested by other scholars with the suggested charring rate value in this test, namely the charring rate data at 75 k W/m2of the CONE in this test. The two sets of data are in good agreement. The deviation of the two groups of data on the charring rate of parallel strand bamboo is mostly within 0.1 mm/min,and the deviation of laminated bamboo is mostly within 0.2mm/min. |
