The automobile manufacturing industry is a pillar industry of modern industry,which can measure the development level of a country’s manufacturing industry.Strategic cost management based on the value chain for automotive manufacturing enterprises can create a competitive advantage in key activities of the enterprise value chain,and ensure the sustainable development of the enterprise from a strategic perspective.However,in the face of complex and ever-changing business situations such as tight market demand,unresolved chip shortages,and rising prices of battery raw materials,as well as the development wave of electrification,intelligence,and networking in the automotive industry,Dongfeng Automobile Group,one of China’s four major automobile groups,is facing numerous crises such as weak joint ventures,overcapacity,and unfavorable new energy transformation.The group’s competitive advantage is constantly being weakened.Studying the strategic cost management of Dongfeng Motor Group from the perspective of the value chain,analyzing existing problems,and proposing optimization suggestions can help Dongfeng Motor Group overcome difficulties,create long-term competitive advantages,and provide reference and reference for traditional car companies in the automotive manufacturing industry that also face challenges.This article takes Dongfeng Motor Group as the research object,and through strategic positioning analysis,value chain analysis,and strategic cost driver analysis,summarizes the current situation of Dongfeng Motor Group’s strategic cost management based on the value chain;Collect relevant data through the official website of the National Bureau of Statistics,the i Fin D financial database of Tonghuashun,the annual report of Dongfeng Motor Group,and the ESG report.Use the Balanced Scorecard as a tool for evaluating the effectiveness of strategic cost management,and select core indicators with strong operability,high quantification,and transparency from the financial dimension,customer dimension,internal business process dimension,learning and growth dimension,And select Geely Automobile,Great Wall Motor and the industry median data of Hong Kong listed companies in the same industry for horizontal comparison,and conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis on the effect of strategic cost management of Dongfeng Motor Group.Research has found that although Dongfeng Motor Group continues to integrate strategy into key links of the value chain for cost management,the overall implementation effect of strategic cost management is poor,internal cost control is not in place,and profitability is showing a decreasing trend year by year.This is closely related to the key activities of various links in the internal and external value chain.The internal value chain strategic cost management of Dongfeng Motor Group has problems such as incomplete control procedures for strategic cost management,disconnection between research and development investment and strategic direction,overcapacity,and inventory backlog.The external value chain has problems such as high supply chain risks and insufficient market penetration.Therefore,based on a combination of field research and literature research,this article proposes targeted optimization suggestions for building and implementing a performance evaluation system for strategic cost management,promoting digital research and development,revitalizing idle production capacity,strengthening the construction of a digital warehouse management platform,strengthening supplier management,and accelerating digital marketing transformation.I hope to provide reference for other listed companies in the automotive manufacturing industry to improve their value chain based strategic cost management methods while improving the value chain of Dongfeng Motor Group.
