As an important public space in the city,the historic commercial district is a source of urban vitality and a carrier of history and culture,carrying the collective memory of the public and citizens.At present,there are many problems such as the convergence of urban images,the gradual weakening of local characteristics,the loss of urban memory carriers and the difficulties in passing on the culture of places.The revitalisation of historical commercial areas is an important part of the old urban renewal process and a key pilot for the revitalisation of the old city.Taking the commercial area of Shenzhen’s Dongmen Old Street as the object of study,we apply theories related to place memory to the revitalisation of historical commercial areas,and develop specific revitalisation designs in terms of physical space,functional form and the spirit of place.Through the perceptual experience of the people in the neighbourhood,the link between the material carrier and the subject is established,forming an emotional connection and cultural identity for the memory subject,thus realising the continuity of the place,and serving as a source of endogenous urban dynamics to catalyse the reinvention of the vitality of the old city.The design practice summarises the implementable strategies and approaches,providing theoretical basis and practical guidance for the rational promotion of urban regeneration and the revitalisation of places.It is a useful reference on how to reconcile the practical issues between modern urban development with historical and cultural inheritance in urban renewal.This paper presents a study on the revitalisation of historic commercial districts based on the perspective of place memory.The overall structure of the study begins with an overview of the theory of place memory and the contents of revitalisation of historic commercial districts,and points out the existing problems of historic commercial districts.Secondly,through the analysis of the coupling between place memory and historic commercial district revitalisation,a comprehensive system of historic commercial district revitalisation is constructed to clarify the key points and contents of historic commercial district revitalisation,which is supplemented by actual cases of historic commercial district revitalisation.This is followed by an exploration of the revitalisation of the commercial area of Dongmen Old Street,in which the principles of revitalisation are established and corresponding revitalisation strategies are proposed,taking into account the elements of place memory and the development process of Dongmen Old Street.Finally,the design of the revitalisation of the commercial area of Dongmen Old Street is verified and supplemented by practical illustrations.
