Ophthalmic diseases in small animals are numerous and vision is an essential function for animals to make quick and accurate actions. The cornea is located in the outermost layer of the eye and is highly susceptible to various diseases. The cornea is divided into four structural layers which can be histologically stratified into an epithelial layer,a stromal layer,a posterior elastic layer and a cellular membrane. The cornea is a transparent membrane that protrudes toward the front and has a refractive effect. There is a dynamic balance between corneal detachment and regeneration.Once the balance in the corneal epithelium is disturbed that it can lead to corneal ulcers. The clinical symptoms of corneal ulcers depend on the cause and the stage of pathogenesis with tearing, photophobia, conjunctival congestion in the affected eye possibly accompanied by blepharospasm and increased discharge.Any type of injury with corneal defects that do not heal is called a corneal ulcer.Corneal ulcers dominate the entire spectrum of ophthalmologic disease and corneal ulcers in cats cannot be generalized. The simple to complex ulcer category requires in-depth analysis and aggressive treatment.Currently, there is a paucity of veterinary clinical data comparing conservative pharmacological and surgical treatment options for corneal ulcers in cats, making in-depth study of corneal ulcers a necessity in response to environmental and clinical developments. Therefore,in this experiment,we collected natural cases and compared the clinical symptoms and treatment methods of different cases to summarize and analyze them and compiled a better diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis of corneal ulcers in cats is relatively simple and the diagnosis of corneal ulcers can be made by interviewing the affected animals and using sodium fluorescein test and slit lamp examination.Additional tests such as ocular ultrasound, cytological examination and swab peeling test are required to specifically identify a certain type of corneal ulcer.Experiment 1: Different types of corneal ulcers should be treated in different ways. The more superficial ulcers can be treated conservatively with drugs, such as eye wash,anti-infection,corneal repair and analgesic drugs.Corneal ulcers that are difficult to be cured by simple drug treatment can be treated with surgical procedures.Depending on the case, corneal debridement, corneal lamellar excision, tipped conjunctival flap covering, corneal transplantation and corneal bandage lens are available.A more reasonable treatment plan for corneal ulcers was compiled by studying the various types of corneal ulcers and their treatments.Experiment 2: Most of the cats with corneal ulcers were accompanied by clinical signs of keratoconjunctivitis. The efficacy of boric acid eye drops was evaluated in 120 cats with corneal ulcers and conjunctivitis during the trial. The trial was divided into 2 groups, the test drug boric acid eye drops and an ophthalmic formulation developed by Chisso Pharmaceuticals,Japan. The selected diseased animals were randomly classified,a quantitative table of conjunctivitis scores and criteria for evaluation of efficacy test results were developed and the general clinical examination indices(body temperature, respiratory rate).Conjunctivitis symptom scores and ocular general symptom reduction scores during the test period were statistically analyzed using SPSS software for the test drug group and the control drug group and conclusions were drawn. Conclusions: First:corneal ulcers account for a large proportion of ophthalmic diseases and have a rising trend. The types of corneal ulcers are complex and the treatment plan changes accordingly;corneas with ulcers have different sonographic characteristics under ocular ultrasound and ultrasound has diagnostic value for corneal diseases;most of the affected cats are concentrated in 1-3Y,commonly in British short,American short and Garfield cats, etc.;the proportion of corneal ulcers in cats treated conservatively with drugs and surgically Similar to the cure rate;drug treatment is more applicable to cases of corneal lysis and corneal perforation with better prognostic transparency of the cornea than surgery and surgical treatment is more applicable in cases of corneal rotting bone and large ulcers.Second:boric acid eye drops 3 times a day,3drops/time for 7 days can achieve the effect of adjuvant treatment of cat corneal ulcers.
