| The rapid ageing of China’s population presents both challenges and opportunities. On the one hand, there is a heavier financial burden on the state in terms of old age, while on the other hand, life expectancy per capita is increasing, more older people are willing to participate in the labour force.Health is fundamental and labour participation presupposes that older people have healthy capital available for work.It is therefore interesting to see what impact labour participation has on the health of older people and through what channels this impact is generated.Combing the relevant literature on the impact of labour participation on the health of older people, using data from the China Health and Aging Tracking Survey(CHARLS)2018,based on theoretical analysis and descriptive statistical analysis,we firstly estimated the likelihood of labour participation among older people with different characteristics using a logit model;secondly, using the propensity score matching method(PSM)to eliminate the influence of confounding factors,we analysed the The heterogeneity of the effects of labour force participation on physical health and mental health is discussed in terms of household registration, gender and age grouping;again, the influence mechanisms of income, health behaviour and life satisfaction are examined based on the health needs model and role theory;and finally, relevant recommendations are made based on the analysis in the previous chapters. This thesis found that:(1)Labour participation can significantly affect the health of older Chinese people in general, and active labour participation improves their self-rated health and depressed mood.(2)The impact of labour force participation on health differed between groups.Labour participation had a significant positive effect on both self-rated health and depressed mood in rural older people, but not in urban older people.Labour participation had a greater effect on depressed mood in men than in women.Labour participation had a significant ameliorating effect on older people in the lower age groups but not in the higher age groups.(3)Labour participation can increase household income, increase physical activity and improve life satisfaction, which in turn has a positive effect on self-rated health and depressed mood.Combined with the previous analysis, the following recommendations are made:First, encourage job transfers within enterprises, improve agricultural production conditions and help match older people with suitable jobs.Secondly, retirement age should be chosen independently, and a differentiated delayed retirement programme should be formulated, taking into account the characteristics and health conditions of the elderly group.Third, encourage older people to participate in physical exercise, attach importance to spiritual and cultural life, and guide them towards healthy behaviour. |
