Objective(s): The purpose of this study is to probe the effect of artificial bone implantation on bone healing when Masquelet technique is used to treat bone defect caused by osteomyelitis. Methods: A total of 36 patients who were hospitalized for osteomyelitis and treated with Masquelet technology in the Department of Orthopaedics of Yunnan first people’s Hospital from January 2018 to December 2022 were included and collected. All the patients completed the implantation of antibiotic bone cement in the first stage of expanded debridement, and the second stage incision induced biofilm to implant different number of artificial bone and autogenous bone.Regular follow-up after operation and Paley bone healing evaluation criteria were used to evaluate bone healing.36 patients gradually completed postoperative follow-up and data collection,in which the counting data were expressed by frequency and cross-table chi-square test. Before analyzing the measurement data, all the experimental data were tested by Shapiro-Wil normality test, and the measurement data were expressed by mean +standard deviation(x ±s).The differences between the two groups were compared by independent sample t test, single factor analysis of variance and correlation analysis by Kendall coefficient correlation analysis. Results: A total of 36 patients completed regular postoperative follow-up,including 2 patients with recurrent infection after the second-stage operation, and the remaining 34 patients reached the standard of bone healing, with a bone healing rate of 94.44%.According to the Paley bone healing evaluation criteria,28 cases were excellent,2 cases were good, the excellent and good rate was 83.33%,and 3 cases were poor. There were significant correlations between age(r = 0.335,P < 0.01),site of bone defect(r = 0.528,P < 0.01),length of bone defect(r = 0.269,P < 0.05)and time of bone healing(P < 0.05),but there was no significant correlation between the duration of disease(P > 0.05)and the number of artificial bone implanted in the second stage(P > 0.05).The difference between the number of artificial bone implants and the time of bone healing was analyzed. There was no significant difference between the number of artificial implants and the time of bone healing(Franch 1.297 P > 0.05).Conclusion(s): Masquelet technique is effective in the treatment of bone defects caused by chronic osteomyelitis. The patient’s age, bone defect site and bone defect length are related to the bone healing time, and the number of artificial bone implanted has no significant effect on the bone healing time,so an appropriate amount of artificial bone can be implanted to fill the bone defect after debridement.
