1919-1931:The Media Identity Shift Of Singapore’s Chinese-language Newspaper Sin Kok Min Jit Pao

Since the emergence of the mass media,overseas Chinese newspapers and periodicals have not only been a first-hand source of historical materials for understanding modern overseas Chinese society,but also an important part of their own development process in the cultural history of overseas Chinese and ethnic Chinese.Those Chinese-language newspapers and periodicals,which were founded in the early and middle of the last century,are the main ways for overseas Chinese to understand the motherland and express their feelings in modern times,and have long undertaken an important social function of creating and guiding the social public opinion of overseas Chinese.The study selected Sin Kok Min Jit Pao,a special and typical Chinese newspaper in the history of Singapore’s newspaper industry in modern Times,as the object of investigation,and adopted the literature research method,text analysis method and case analysis method for comprehensive research.The study puts Sin Kok Min Jit Pao into a broader and complex socio-cultural context for discussion,and uses the concept of "identity" as a new perspective and method to understand the complex interaction between the newspaper and the social environment.Through the analysis of the complex relationship between Sin Kok Min Jit Pao and the society and the newspaper people from1919 to 1931,it is found that in order to survive,seek benefits and make people’s voices,change the self-positioning of the media,adjust the business strategy of the newspaper and periodical,and examine the perspective of literary creation,etc.,and it actively transforms the life trajectory of the "media identity" to survive.Judging from the research results,Sin Kok Min Jit Pao,as a commercial newspaper with a unique political background,ethnic media and Chinese literature development platform,actively conforms to the trend of commercial newspaper operation in Singapore,attaches importance to the protection of the interests of overseas Chinese society,actively guides the localization of literary creation,achieves commercial success,wins the support of overseas Chinese society,and determines Singapore’s pioneering position in the overseas Chinese new literary movement.
