As one of the most important grammatical forms in Chinese,verb reduplication is a common means of expression for Chinese people,but it is difficult for learners of Chinese as a second language.This grammar appears in the primary stage of Chinese learning,however,errors in semantic,syntactic or pragmatic aspects are often generated in the application.Besides,with the increase of students’ Chinese proficiency,the error rate does not decrease significantly.Provoked by this interesting phenomenon,current paper studies the Bulgarian students’ errors of Chinese verb duplication.In this study,a total of 99 errors were collected from 104 Bulgarian Chinese learners at different levels when they used verb reduplication by means of questionnaire and interview.The errors were classified according to three linguistic plane--semantic,syntactic and pragmatic pairs.The bias analysis method and interview are used to analyze the errors and explore the causes and characteristics of the Bulgarian students when acquiring verb duplication.It is found that the grammatical meaning is mastered most inadequately,followed by the syntactic function.The second finding of this paper is that even though the formulas AA and ABAB are the most basic and commonly used ones and they appear in the text books earliest and most frequently,the error rate,generated related to them are the highest among all the formulas.The analysis shows that there are several reasons for this phenomenon:1.There is no reduplication in Bulgarian language,which means the learners have no sense of reduplication of word.Besides,Bulgarian and Chinese culture are totally different,which direct to different communication styles and rules.2.Inadequte opportunities are provided to practice this grammar;3.The textbooks and teachers could have shown a clearer picture of the situations and functions of verb reduplication.According to the current situation and reasons,we put forward some specific suggestions from the aspects of teaching strategies,teachers’language,learners,textbook selection and processing and so on.After that this paper provided a teaching plan of the verb reduplication in the primary stage.
