Since the outbreak of CO VID-19 escalated to a global health public event,COVID-19 vaccine has taken the center stage mainstream media at home and abroad. However, from the perspective of critical discourse and corpus linguistics, rare studies have given an in-depth investigation thus deserving further research. The thesis adopted the Fairclough’s threedimensional model, combined with Halliday’s systematic functional grammar to construct two self-built corpus which contains the extracted 153 and 53 pieces of news reports in China Daily and in The New York Times about COVID vaccine reports,so as to illustrate hidden ideologies and social origins in the public emergency event. The thesis employed Antconc and Tree Tagger as research tool to analyze the selected reports from the three dimensions of description, interpretation, and explanation. The thesis figured out three questions:(1)What are the differences between China Daily and The New York Times on COVID-19 vaccine in terms of lexical features?(2)What factors has brought about these differences in terms of news reporting mode and news sources from China Daily and The New York Times?(3)What factors has led to the different ideologies in China Daily and The New York Times from the perspective of political context and social-cultural context? The main findings of this study are as follows:Firstly,at the description level,it is observed that China Daily and New York Times present a remarkable significant difference in terms of lexical features. For the Chinese reporters, they are prone to use more encouraged and promising words.Lexical choice of vaccine cooperation, vaccine assistance, vaccine development is especially highlighted to establish China’s image as a confident and responsible major country. On the contrary,The New York Times pays much attention to the issues which might be caused by vaccination, such as vaccine hesitancy and misinformation of vaccine and concerns more about the vaccine diplomacy and nationalism.Regarding the transitivity analysis, the material, verbal and relational processes are outnumbered in both media. In terms of modal analysis, interestingly, when comparing the two corpora,it is observed that China Daily has a higher proportion of median value modal words than the New York Times, while low-value modal words are lower than that of The New York Times. The cases studies of low value verbs in New York Times reveals its tendency to employ more negative form and disapproving voice through vaccination.Secondly,at the interpretation level,as to news source,China Daily contains less varied source compared with that of The New York Times which latter presents a higher credibility in its speech. In addition to the experts and governments which both two corpora put on emphasis with,China daily highlighted the individual voice to care about people’s livelihood and attaches importance to the voice of the people. In terms of news mode,it illustrates New York Times employs a larger number of direct speeches, which is more authentic and credible in terms of this aspect than of in China Daily.New York Times also tends to broadcast a larger number of indirect quotations which demonstrates its deliberation of hiding the ideology of their officials.Thirdly,at the explanation phase,it is suggested that the COVID vaccine news reports inevitably influenced by the underpinned political,social-cultural context.Politically, both China Daily and The New York Times attempts to safeguard the interests of their countries and attempt to shape their ideologies. As far as culture is concerned, cultural differences are the deeper factors resulted in ideological differences. This thesis broadens the scope of critical discourse analysis to the scope of corpus-based domain, coupled with the comparison study on COVID vaccine, providing a new horizon for the readers to uncover the hidden ideologies.Besides, the corpus which composes of COVID vaccine related material and analysis will be a stepped stone for the further study on public emergency event.
