| Learning burnout is a negative learning psychology that students experience during the learning process,while learning engagement is a positive and complete mental state that students maintain during learning.As positive psychology research continues to advance,learning burnout is rising on the horizon and becoming a hot topic in the field of education.In view of this,this study investigates the current situation of high school students’ English learning burnout and English learning engagement,and analyzes the correlation between the two,in order to help students overcome learning burnout and improve their initiative in English learning.The study is based on Maslach’s Three-Dimensional Burnout Theory and Fredricks’ Learning Engagement Model Theory.A questionnaire survey and semistructured interviews are conducted on 239 high school students from Zengcheng No.1Middle School,Guangzhou.The study explores three questions:(1)What is the overall situation of English learning burnout among high school students?(2)What is the overall situation of English learning engagement among high school students?(3)What is the relationship between English learning burnout and English learning engagement among high school students?The research results show that:(1)The overall level of English learning burnout among senior high school students is moderate.In its sub dimensional,the highest level is low self-efficacy,followed by learning cynicism and physical and mental exhaustion.(2)The overall level of English learning engagement among senior high school students is moderate.In its sub dimensional,the highest level is emotional engagement,followed by the behavioral engagement and cognitive engagement.(3)There is a negative correlation between English learning burnout and English learning engagement among senior high school students.Each dimension of English learning burnout has different significant negative predictors for each dimension of English learning engagement.Physical and mental exhaustion has a significant negative predictive effect on behavioral and emotional engagement;learning cynicism has a significant negative predictive effect on behavioral engagement;low self-efficacy has a significant negative predictive effect on behavioral and cognitive engagement.Based on the research results,the following suggestions are proposed in this paper.From the perspective of teachers,they may flexibly use teaching methods to enhance the interest of the classroom,create a supportive classroom environment to improve students’ confidence,and cooperatively work with parents to listen to students’ voices.From the perspective of students,they may set appropriate learning goals,manage their time to maintain study-life balance,and improve the quality of their sleep. |
