| Since its appearance,the Sino-Kharosthi coin has always been a subject of concern in international academia.Early researchers of the Sino-Kharosthi coin are mostly coin discoverers and foreign experts,such as Forsyth,Stein,and Cribb.In recent decades,Chinese scholars have also made some achievements.However,since most of the coins are lost in abroad and Chinese scholars lack of material object,further research has been limited.In order to master the latest research status of the coin,studying foreign scholars’ papers has become an important research approach.Therefore,this report takes the famous British numismatist Joe Cribb’s The Sino-Kharosthi Coins of Khotan and Their Significance for This Kingdom’s Interregional Connections as the source text.Cribb’s research achievements have a far-reaching influence in academia and can provide a new research perspective for Chinese scholars.This paper firstly analyzes the types and characteristics of the source text and finds that the text is both academic and informative.The difficulties encountered by the translator mainly include inaccurate translation of terminology,hidden logic in the context and difficult to define the scope of translator’s subjectivity.Based on this,the translator chooses Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory as a guide to seek solutions from the following aspects: referring to authoritative texts,logical explicitation and giving priority to the target readers’ effect and the purpose of publication.In translation,the translator adopts the translation strategies such as amplification,conversion,adjustment of word order,sentence reconstruction to make the translation not only faithful to the source text,but also consistent with the readers’ reading habits,and achieve the purpose of communicative translation.Through this practice,the translator has gained a deeper understanding of academic translation and better realized the importance of standard translation process for translation result. |
