Desert Hunters is the representative work of Xue Mo,a famous Chinese writer. It tells the story of two groups of herdsmen fighting for pasture in western China, and portrays the difficult plight of farmers in western China. The novel contains a large number of words with cultural characteristics, showing the cultural features of Gansu. The translation of culture-loaded words in literary works is directly related to the transmission of cultural connotations and cultural exchange. Therefore,it is necessary to study the translation of culture-loaded words.Eco-translatology holds that translation is a complex process involving multiple dimensions.Translators’ translation activities are restricted by the ecological environment.Translators need to constantly adapt and select from the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions to achieve translation transformation. Therefore, the thesis selects the culture-loaded words in Lie Yuan and its English version as the research corpus and uses the three-dimensional transformation of Eco-translatology as the theoretical framework to specifically explore the adaptation and selection of the translator in the ecological environment, analyze the factors affecting the translator’s translation strategies, and summarize the translation strategies of culture-loaded words. The research shows that Eco-translatology has guiding significance for translating culture-loaded words.Translators,Goldblatt and Sylvia-Chun Lin,adopted the translation strategy of combining domestication and forcignization, which is well adapted to the source language’s ecological environment.Their translations can not only accurately convey the cultural connotation of the source language but also take into account the reading needs of the target language readers so as to achieve a relative balance between the ecological environment of the source language and the target language.Firstly,at the level of linguistic dimension, translators often used literal translation and substitution methods to maintain the equivalence of the form and meaning of the source language as much as possible, supplemented by free translation to compensate for the information of the source language.Secondly,at the level of cultural dimension, for ecological, material and religious culture-loaded words, translators mostly used literal translation, free translation and transliteration to achieve the interpretation and transmission of cultural connotations. Finally,at the level of the communicative dimension, the adaptive selection of translators is mainly based on the source language ecological environment, mainly using free translation, addition and cultural substitution to realize the communicative intention of the source language. The thesis studies the translation of culture-loaded words in western literary works from the perspective of three-dimensional transformation of Eco-translatology.It has two research values:on the one hand,it is conducive to deepening the understanding of the connotation of culture-loaded words in Lie Yuan;on the other hand,it helps to broaden the research scope of Eco-translatology and provides a strong explanation for the feasibility of Eco-translatology in guiding culture-loaded words.
