In the post-millennium era, with the transition of rural-urban relations to a new stage and the tilting of policies and resources towards rural areas, the rural space has seen a renewed vitality, and a large number of high-quality texts that record rural changes have emerged. This has made rural areas another perspective for reflecting the process of modernization. In the second half of the 20 th century, influenced by the "spatial turn" trend, many scholars in the fields of philosophy and social sciences conducted research on space. In this research,Henri Lefebvre regarded space as an important constituent of social relations, and his assertion that "the production of space has shifted from the production of things in space to the production of space itself" opened up a new research path of "the dialectics of space".Against this theoretical background, this paper selects rural-themed documentary films produced since the turn of the new century as the research object, and through the analysis of spatial narratives in the images, including their types, functions and techniques,it reveals the construction process of rural space narratives, and on this basis expounds the social and historical context of rural space production. This paper shifts the research perspective from time to space, firstly, the types of spatial narratives refer to the material spatial symbols that frequently and repeatedly appear in the text.Based on the analysis of semiotics, this paper delves into the social and historical context and explores the symbolic meanings and construction paths of space in the documentary films.Secondly, the functions of spatial narratives are further analyzed to explore how narrative spaces participate in all aspects of the narrative and affect the expression of the text. The paper examines how space in documentary films promotes narrative development. Finally, the paper analyzes the audio-visual techniques from the perspective of spatial narratives, and points out the role of vision and hearing in broadening the spatial dimension.Rural-themed documentary films contain profound propositions about modernization.Using spatial narratives as an analytical framework to observe the development needs of rural areas and the spatial changes brought about by urbanization expansion,we can see the inherent contradictions in the text, that is,the choice between tradition and modernity. This contradiction is reflected on various spatial levels, and will also be manifested in future documentary practices.
