In recent years,with the improvement of people’s living standards around the world,there have been more and more diseases due to over or unbalanced nutrition,which seriously threaten people’s health and influence their life.Most books about nutrition are highly specialized,while popular science texts about nutrition can popularize relevant knowledge of healthy diet and promote scientific spirit in a more acceptable way.Eating Well for Optimum Health as a popular text has never been translated into Chinese,so the translator chose this book as the translation project.Chapter 2 selected for this translation project is mainly concerned with the roles of nutrients in human body and where they come from,so as to encourage people to develop good dietary habits and change their lifestyles.The receptors of the original text are the public,and the purpose is to share the knowledge of nutrition with the target readers and encourage them to develop good dietary habits.The translator chose Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the guidance because it focuses on the target readers,conveys information and allows readers to think and act,thus achieving the communicative goals.While the content of the source text is serious and accurate,its language is plain and easy to understand.The translation should be faithful to the main features of the target language and spread true and reliable scientific knowledge of nutrition.Firstly,on the lexical level,some translation techniques like addition,omission,and conversion were utilized by the translator.Secondly,on the syntactic level,the translator paid attention to the translation of long and complex sentences and passives voices.Finally,she analyzed the cohesive devices of sentences and paragraphs and made the translation more natural on the discoursal level.The translator boldly adopted the target language-oriented translation techniques and shared knowledge of nutrition with the target readers.She hopes that the translation practice could provide useful reference for the translation of popular science texts about nutrition.Meanwhile,she could find her own shortcomings in translation and make up for them,so as to gradually improve her translation ability. |
