Traditional research on foreign language teaching and learning from a psychological perspective has focused on negative emotions such as anxiety and de-motivation.Stimulated by Positive Psychology, there has been a growing research interest in positive traits and emotions experienced by foreign language learners. This echoes the key tenets of China’s allround education as well as the infusion of positive emotions in the English classroom advocated by English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 edition,2020 revision).Academic buoyancy refers to the ability of students to bounce back from academic setbacks and challenges successfully in everyday school activities. The influence of academic buoyancy on academic achievement has been documented in literature, while its influence in the specific domain of foreign learning remains underexplored.Underpinned by theories and assumptions of positive psychology, the present study examined the complex relationships between foreign language academic buoyancy, enjoyment and academic achievement of high school students in order to make pertinent suggestions for the growth and intervention of their foreign language learning emotions.A total of 375 second-year senior high school students from four schools at different levels provided their demographic information and responded to questionnaires.Specifically, this study was guided by the following two research questions:(1)What is the status quo of senior high school students’ foreign language academic buoyancy and enjoyment?(2)What is the relationship between students’ foreign language academic buoyancy, enjoyment and academic achievement? The study employed a mixed-methods approach to gather and analyze data.Specifically, the data were collected through a combination of surveys and interviews, and analyzed using statistical software packages including SPSS 25.0 and MPLUS 8.3.The analysis utilized various statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test,one-way ANOVA,correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation effects analysis. The rigorous application of these analytical techniques ensured the accuracy and reliability of the findings presented in the study. The findings are summarized as follows:(1)Foreign language academic buoyancy and enjoyment were at a moderate level among senior high school students.Students’ private and atmosphere enjoyment need to be improved. There were significant differences in students’ foreign language academic buoyancy in terms of gender, subject choice and only child status. There were significant differences in students’ foreign language enjoyment in terms of gender, choice of subject, only child status, type of school and mother’s highest level of education.(2)There was a two-way significant positive correlation among foreign language academic buoyancy, enjoyment and achievement among senior high school students.According to the results of the mediating effect test, foreign language enjoyment partially mediated the relationship between academic buoyancy and achievement. The student’s academic buoyancy could be partially mediated by their private enjoyment and atmosphere enjoyment;teacher enjoyment played a suppressing effect between academic buoyancy and academic achievement. The thesis provides several pedagogical implications which encompass the following areas:Firstly, schools should prioritize psychological health education for students.Secondly, foreign language teachers should strive to create an inclusive and cooperative classroom atmosphere through innovative teaching strategies.Thirdly, parents should offer more support and empathy toward their children.Lastly, students should take steps toward self-regulation and develop study plans. These results can aid in the advancement of positive psychology within foreign language learning and assist high school students in developing sound mental and physical health, positive psychological traits, and ultimately achieving academic success in foreign language learning.
