A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of A Brand Of Battery Electric Vehicle Usage And Three Warranties Manual (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory

The new energy industry is drawing national and social attention as a result of the national policy that is ardently promoting low-carbon environmental protection,reducing the use of non-renewable resources like oil for improving energy utilization,and promoting sustainable and healthy development.The demand for translation of related automotive literature will thereafter rise as battery electric vehicles also become a widespread trend in the automotive industry.The source text selected in this paper is “A Brand of Battery Electric Vehicle Usage and Three Warranties Manual ”,which was obtained by the translator during her six-month internship at a local automobile company.After the analysis and judgment by my supervisor,the source text,which may be used as the translation material for this translation practice.This translation and research can not only provide guidance and help for the users and maintenance personnel of electric vehicles in overseas markets,but also provide some reference value for the translation practice of the same type in the future.This report is divided into five main chapters.In Chapter 1,the translator gives a brief introduction to the background,significance and structure of the practice report.The Chapter 2 is about the translation process,which mainly includes the preparation before translation,the analysis of the source text during translation,and the proofreading and typesetting after translation.Chapter 3 is a literature review of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory.By reviewing foreign and domestic studies on Catford’s Translation Shift Theory,the translator explores the feasibility and practicality of using Catford’s Translation Shift Theory to guide the translation of scientific and technical texts.Chapter 4 is a case study,which is also the main part of this practice report.The translator analyzes the examples of source text in detail from both level shifts and category shifts under the guidance of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory.Chapter 5 is a summary of the report,in which the translator presents her main findings and constructive suggestions through the completion of the practice report,hoping to provide help and reference for future translations of scientific and technical texts.Based on the guidance of Translation Shift Theory,this report analyzes the translation work of automobile texts,and summarizes the translation techniques and methods of such scientific and technological texts by verb-adjective shift,verb-noun shift,active-passive shift,pre-attribute words and post-attribute words shift,sentence-phrase shift and shift between sentences and subordinate clauses.After analysis,the translator has found that translation shift is the equivalent shift of two languages,which happens in a certain scenario.Additionally,employing translation methods is crucial.Only by fusing translation practice,translation strategies,and Translation Shift Theory can we accomplish the goal of theory directing practice.As a result of the analysis,the translated texts under the perspective of Translation Shift Theory are not only more readable,but also able to retain the special nature of the scientific and technical field,which provides valuable reference and guidance for future scientific and technical translation work.
