| In 1998,there was a serious ethnic conflict in the Solomon Islands, mainly between the Guadalcanal and the Malaitas. The causes of this ethnic conflict can be traced back to the period of the British Solomon Islands Conservation Territory. At the end of the 19 th century, out of strategic need,Britain colonized the Solomon Islands.Economically, the sovereign state established an economic model supported by natural resources;politically, the sovereign state implanted the Westminster system into the protective collar. After the independence of the country,Solomon Islands still followed the economic and political model of the colonial period. With the extension of the ruling time of the independent government, the disadvantages of this ruling strategy are gradually revealed.First of all,in the 1990 s,the logging industry, especially timber export, became the pillar industry of the country. In 1997,the economy of Solomon Islands was devastated by the Asian financial crisis.Secondly, the Westminster system is out of line with the local reality, resulting in the separation of the western provinces, the inaction of government officials, the non-existence of the political party system and many other political problems that lead to the decline of the credibility of the government. In the context of serious problems in both economic and political governance, there are also serious drawbacks in social governance in Solomon Islands. In order to make a living or enjoy better social resource services, people are constantly moving closer to Honiara, the capital. With the increasing population of Honiara, the pressure of overloading population on resources is also increasing. The hostility of the Guadalcanal towards non-locals is also growing. The lack of national concept education aggravates the contradiction between local ethnic groups. When the need for legitimate power protection is not met,the Guadalcanal naturally target the largest non-local population, the Malaitas. In October 1998,the Guadalcanal people began to drive out the Malaitas, and the ethnic conflict began. |
