This is a report built around an English–Chinese translation practice.The selected text is chapters 3 to 16 of the book Kobe Bryant: The Life of The Most Incredible Basketball Player Legend of All Time and His Mamba Mentality by Ronald James.The author’s selection covers Kobe’s entire basketball career,from his first days in the NBA to his honorable retirement,from the teenager who signed with the Lakers before he was a grown–up to who should have enjoyed his retirement but died from a crash accident,the author presents us with the real Kobe.There are about 13,600 words in the source text,and about 23,400 words in the translated text.According to the “Comprehension,Expression and Adaption”(CEA)framework proposed by Li Changshuan,this report analyzes a large number of examples to summarize how to solve problems related to comprehension,expression and adaption.“Comprehension” introduces how the author addressed the comprehension difficulties encountered in translating through background information,context and language details;“expression” focuses on how to solve the expression difficulties encountered in translating by adjusting the sentence structures and using Chinese idioms;“adaption”presents how to solve the adaptation problems encountered in translating by means of addition,flexible treatment and improvement of the source text.Through this translation practice,the translator has gained a deeper understanding of the translation of sports biography texts,and hopes to provide some reference and help for other translators.
