| As one of Chinese Qigong exercises,Ba Duan Jin plays an important role in fighting against COVID-19 epidemic and is of great practical values in life nurturing and medical treatment.Ba Duan Jin has proved the value and effect of Chinese Medical Qigong therapy and also promoted the spread of Chinese Qigong exercises. In the process, translation takes as a bridge of communication, playing a significant role in promoting the spread and development of Chinese Medical Qigong culture.Hence, the translation study is of great significance. But the translation study of Ba Duan Jin is obviously insufficient and there is a lack of unified standard and systematic discussion on it.Based on the theory of adaptation and selection, the paper has analyzed the terminology, designations for the Qigong exercises and practical training text in different English versions of Ba Duan Jin from the three dimensions of language, culture and communication through the methods of comparative study and literature analysis to achieve the balance in the ecological environment of translation and explore new translation thoughts, strategies and methods for Ba Duan Jin.ObjectivesThe research follows the trend in "telling the Chinese medical stories to the world" and accords with the health preservation policy of Chinese medicine.Through the research, the paper aims to deepen the audiences’ understanding of Qigong exercises at home and abroad, promote the international communication of Qigong culture, broaden the research vision in translating Ba Duan Jin and explore new translation thoughts, strategies and methods for Chinese medical Qigong exercises.MethodsFour research methods are used in the paper:literature research method, comparative study, inductive summary method and data analysis method.Through sorting out relevant literature, this paper has selected different versions and classified Ba Duan Jin into three aspects:terminology, designations for the Qigong exercises and practical training text.Under the guidance of the theory of adaptation and selection, the paper has compared and analyzed the terminology, designations for the Qigong exercises and practical training text from the three dimensions, summarized the translation problems, and then calculated out the numbers and proportions of the problems, which provides practical data reference for translation optimization and further research.ResultsThe research has shown that the literature about the study on the English translation of Ba Duan Jin is insufficient and there is a lack of unified standard and systematic discussion on it.In the paper,seventy-six English translations have been listed from the twenty-seven examples carefully selected and it’s found that 59.21%translations do not totally achieve the adaptation and selection of the "three dimensions" through comparative study and literature analysis. The problems in the translations are mainly involved with incomplete translation, wordy translation, ignorance of cultural connotation, improper choice of words, inconsistency in letter case, too much colloquial in sentence structure and so on,which need further modification and improvement so as to promote the spread of Chinese Medical Qigong Exercises for Nurturing Life.Among them, the problem of ignorance of cultural connotation accounts for the largest proportion, followed by the problems of incomplete translation, improper choice of words and inconsistency in letter case. The problems of wordy translation and too much colloquial in sentence structure account for a relatively small proportion.ConclusionsThe literature about the study on the translation of Ba Duan Jin is insufficient and there is a lack of unified standard and systematic discussion on it.Forty-two terms have been sorted out from the five books about Ba Duan Jin in English translation version and three related dictionaries currently available for selection.Based on the theory of adaptation and selection, the paper analyzes the seventy-six English translations from the twenty-seven examples carefully selected about terminology, designations for the Qigong exercises and practical training text in different translation versions from the three dimensions of language, culture, and communication.According to the analysis results,it is found that some versions do not totally achieve the adaptation and selection of the "three dimensions".In view of these problems, the paper has explored new translation thoughts and strategies for Ba Duan Jin in practical training version from the four aspects:careful thinking, critical thinking, creative thinking and flexible thinking, and meanwhile tried new translation methods, which is conducive to the adaption of the translations to the ecological environment of translation so as to achieve a survival of the fittest. Finally, the recommended translations of the terms carefully selected are provided for reference.InnovationsThis is the first try to apply the theory of Eco-Translatology to the translation of Ba Duan Jin.By analyzing Ba Duan Jin in practical training version from three aspects:terminology, designations for the Qigong exercises and practical training text with a systematic view, the paper has made some innovations in translation thoughts, strategies and methods. It’s proposed in this paper that four translation thoughts and strategies including careful thinking, critical thinking, creative thinking and flexible thinking should be emphasized in translation. And various translation methods have been tried in order to optimize and improve Ba Duan Jin in practical training version, which will provide some reference for the unification and standardization of Qigong translation.LimitationsThere is less literature and information on the translation study of Ba Duan Jin.And what’s more, the practical training text in different versions are not completely consistent.Hence, the versions available for selection are very limited, resulting in some limitation when analyzing and comparing the translations from the three dimensions of language, culture and communication. |
